U.S. Strikes on Iran’s Islands Intensify Tensions in Persian Gulf
Recent military actions in the Persian Gulf have heightened tensions surrounding key strategic locations, particularly the islands off Iran’s coast. A United States strike on Kharg Island last week targeted military sites crucial to Iran’s oil infrastructure, raising concerns over potential further conflict in the region. The U.S. President, Donald Trump, claimed that the military assets on the island were “totally obliterated,” yet satellite images from TankerTrackers indicated that the oil infrastructure remains largely intact, with vessels continuing to load fuel.
Strategic Importance of Kharg Island
Kharg Island is a pivotal point for Iran’s oil exports, situated approximately 33 kilometers (21 miles) from Iran’s mainland. According to U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, “He who controls Kharg Island, controls the destiny of this war.” Since the onset of the conflict, Iran has exported approximately 13.7 million barrels of oil, with significant revenue generated from shipments to countries such as China. The island features storage tanks and housing for thousands of workers, making it a vital asset in Iran’s economy.
Energy researcher Petras Katinas from the Royal United Services Institute emphasized the island’s importance not only for Iran’s economy but also for its governance. He noted that losing control of Kharg Island would severely limit Iran’s operational capabilities, regardless of the regime in power. The island acts as a key node in Iran’s economic structure, and any further military action against it could lead to serious repercussions.
In an investment note, JPMorgan warned that additional strikes on Kharg could result in immediate halts to Iran’s crude exports, potentially triggering severe retaliation in the Strait of Hormuz or targeting regional energy infrastructure. The recent U.S. strikes reportedly hit over 90 targets, including air defenses and a radar site, as detailed by the Institute for the Study of War.
Ongoing Tensions Over Other Strategic Islands
The conflict extends beyond Kharg Island to other strategic locations, including Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunb islands. These territories have long been points of contention between Iran and Gulf states allied with the United States. Iranian forces seized control of these islands in November 1971, shortly after the United Kingdom withdrew from the region. Iran maintains significant military assets on these islands, further complicating the geopolitical landscape.
Iran has claimed that U.S. forces also struck Abu Musa, although this has not been confirmed by U.S. Central Command. The territorial disputes surrounding these islands remain a persistent flashpoint in Gulf tensions, underscoring the region’s volatility.
Another significant area is Qeshm Island, the largest in the Persian Gulf, home to approximately 150,000 residents. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed that a U.S. strike on March 8, 2025, targeted a desalination plant on the island, a claim that has not been acknowledged by Washington. Araghchi warned that attacking Iran’s infrastructure could have dire consequences, emphasizing the potential for escalation.
The situation in the Persian Gulf illustrates the intricate balance of power in the region, where military actions can lead to broader implications for international energy markets and geopolitical relations. The stakes are remarkably high, as any miscalculation could trigger significant conflict in an area critical to global oil supply.
As the situation develops, the international community watches closely, aware that the outcomes in this strategically vital region could affect global stability.
