Community Remembers Jerry Dean Smith, 82, of Evansville

Jerry Dean Smith, aged 82, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on March 13, 2026. Smith, who was known for his dedication to family and work, leaves behind a rich legacy and a community that mourns his loss.

Born on October 29, 1943, in Greenville, Kentucky, he was the son of Henry Dee Smith and Ethel E. (Watkins) Smith. Smith graduated from Hughes-Kirk High School in 1961, marking the beginning of a hardworking career that spanned several decades. He devoted 19 years to Amax Ashire Coal Company and spent 12 years at Whirlpool. Smith concluded his professional journey with a role at Evansville Garage Doors, retiring in 2003.

A Life of Faith and Family

Throughout his life, Jerry was a devoted member of the Washington Avenue Church of Christ. His faith was a cornerstone of his existence, guiding him through both personal and professional challenges. In addition to his commitment to work and faith, he enjoyed various hobbies that brought him joy, including golfing, fishing, and bowling. Traveling, especially to Hawaii, was a particular passion of his.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Brenda Kay (Agee) Smith. Together, they nurtured a family that includes their son Kevin Smith and daughter-in-law Jo Lisa Smith. His grandchildren—Katie Reuscher (Josh), Andrew Smith (Mandy), Devon Smith (Lauren), Amanda James (Robert), and James Smith—along with great-grandchildren Elijah, Preston, Adleigh, Duncan, Ryker, Zaleigh, Everleigh, Kenzie, and Levi, will carry on his legacy. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Jerry Dale Smith, one brother, and three sisters.

Funeral Arrangements and Community Support

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on March 19, 2026, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel, located at 5330 Washington Avenue. Alan Bush will officiate the service. Following the service, Jerry will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Mausoleum, 2200 Mesker Park Drive, in Evansville.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during visiting hours on March 18, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and again from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heritage Hospice at 1202 W Buena Vista Rd #107, Evansville, IN 47710.
