UPDATE: A frost advisory has just been issued for several counties in Pennsylvania for tomorrow, October 20, 2023. The National Weather Service warns that temperatures will plummet into the 30s, creating conditions for dangerous frost formation.

The advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. for residents of Franklin, Dauphin, Lebanon, Cumberland, Adams, York, and Lancaster counties. This frost has the potential to harm sensitive outdoor vegetation, posing a significant risk to local agriculture and gardens.

According to the National Weather Service, “Frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation. Sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered.” Residents are urged to take action immediately to protect their plants. The coldest temperatures are expected in sheltered rural areas and valley locations, where frost is most likely to form.

Farmers and gardeners should cover up sensitive plants before sunset to help retain heat, or, if possible, move them indoors for the night. The weather service emphasizes that frost advisories are typically issued during the growing season from May to October but can be extended when conditions are favorable for frost development.

The potential for a severe frost, known as a “killing frost,” could threaten the growing season for crops and flowers. With temperatures forecasted to drop to 36 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, immediate precautions are essential.

Stay tuned for updates as meteorological conditions evolve. Residents are encouraged to prepare now to mitigate damage to their gardens and crops. Don’t wait—protect your plants tonight!
