Kidd Praises Flagg’s Preseason Performance, Leaves Role Uncertain

Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd commended the performance of rookie Cooper Flagg as the starting point guard during the team’s final two preseason games. However, Kidd refrained from confirming whether Flagg would maintain that position when the regular season begins. Following a decisive 121-94 victory against the Los Angeles Lakers at T-Mobile Arena, Kidd noted the positive developments but emphasized that the team still has time to make a final decision.

Flagg, who stands at 6-foot-8, transitioned to the point guard position after beginning the preseason at forward, a role he played at Duke University. In his two starts at point guard, he averaged 12.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists while playing alongside notable teammates such as Klay Thompson and Anthony Davis. Kidd acknowledged Flagg’s ability to run the team effectively, stating, “I think [Flagg] has done an incredible job of handling the situation of running the team.”

Despite Flagg’s commendable performance, Kidd expressed concerns about the team’s offensive fluidity, particularly in the early stages of the game against the Lakers. The Mavericks fell behind 22-10 before Flagg was substituted out midway through the first quarter. The starting lineup struggled with spacing, as they managed only 3-of-15 from beyond the arc during that game.

“Just continuing to get comfortable,” Flagg remarked after the game. He acknowledged having some mental lapses related to time management and defensive assignments. “Some of those things you can definitely clean up,” he added.

Flagg, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the recent draft, faced challenges defending against Gabe Vincent, who scored 18 points and made five three-pointers in the first few minutes of the game. Kidd commented on the difficulties of defending in pick-and-roll situations, saying, “No matter if you’re 6-4, 6-2, or 6-8, it’s hard.” He expressed confidence in Flagg’s competitiveness and potential to improve with experience.

The Mavericks head coach previously opted for offseason free agency addition D’Angelo Russell as the starting point guard in the team’s initial preseason games. As the regular season approaches, the decision regarding Flagg’s role remains open, with Kidd indicating that the team is evaluating all options.

The preseason has provided valuable insights, and Kidd’s statements reflect a balance of optimism and caution as the Mavericks prepare to finalize their lineup.
