Mike Vrabel Prepares for Emotional Return to Tennessee as Patriots Coach
As the New England Patriots gear up for their upcoming match against the Tennessee Titans, head coach Mike Vrabel reflects on his emotional return to a team he once led. Vrabel, who was dismissed by the Titans in January 2024 after a six-season tenure, is now at the helm of the Patriots, who currently boast a record of 4-2 and sit atop the AFC East.
Vrabel’s Journey Back to Coaching
Vrabel, speaking at a press conference on October 15, 2025, acknowledged the pressures and challenges of his role in the NFL. He said, “It’s not all fun and games,” highlighting the long hours and high expectations that come with being a head coach. Despite the challenges, he was determined to return to coaching after his time with the Titans ended. During his interim role with the Cleveland Browns, he structured his contract to allow for early interviews for head coaching positions, a move that ultimately led to his current role with the Patriots.
Looking ahead to his match against the Titans, Vrabel noted the significance of returning to a place where he spent six pivotal years. “It would be very interesting, but in the end, not very important to our preparation,” he stated. He expressed eagerness to reconnect with former colleagues and players from his time in Tennessee but emphasized the need for focus as the Patriots prepare for the game.
Changes Within the Titans Organization
The Titans made headlines recently by firing Brian Callahan, Vrabel’s successor, following a dismal record of 4-19. This decision reflects not just on Callahan’s performance but also the broader organizational struggles under owner Amy Adams Strunk. Vrabel acknowledged the human aspect of such decisions, recalling the support he received from peers after his own dismissal. “There’s a human element to this that I don’t want to forget,” he remarked, underscoring the camaraderie that exists among coaches in the league.
While Vrabel did not dwell on the Titans’ current state, he recognized the challenges that come with coaching in the NFL. He stated, “The surprises in our business shouldn’t be surprises. Things happen in this league.” His focus remains firmly on the Patriots, who are exceeding expectations this season, particularly with their offense led by quarterback Drake Maye.
Vrabel’s return to coaching has not only revitalized his career but also positioned him as an early favorite for Coach of the Year. The Patriots, under his leadership, have shown remarkable resilience and determination, with a strong playoff outlook in his first season back with the franchise.
As the game approaches, Vrabel is aware that discussions will inevitably center around his past with the Titans. However, he insists that his priority is on preparation and improvement rather than any personal agenda. “We’re not trying to win one for the Gipper here,” he quipped. The focus is squarely on ensuring his players are ready to perform at their best.
Reflecting on his journey since his departure from Tennessee, Vrabel remarked, “Admittedly, it’s hard to enjoy it.” Yet, he is committed to finding joy in the process, whether it entails celebrating victories or navigating the challenges of defeat. With the Patriots primed for a fourth consecutive win, Vrabel’s return to Tennessee promises to be a compelling chapter in his coaching career.
