Brogdon was anticipated to serve as a reserve player for the upcoming NBA season, which begins on October 21, 2023.

In a statement to ESPN, the 32-year-old reflected on his basketball journey, saying, “Today, I officially begin my transition out of my basketball career. I have proudly given my mind, body and spirit to the game over the last few decades. With the many sacrifices it took to get here, I have received many rewards.”

Brogdon expressed gratitude for reaching this stage of his life on his own terms, stating, “I am deeply grateful to have arrived to this point on my own terms and now to be able to reap the benefits of my career with my family and friends. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all who have had a place in my journey.”

Historic Achievements and Career Highlights

Throughout his career, Brogdon has made a significant impact in the league, retiring as one of only two players in NBA history to win both the Rookie of the Year award and the Sixth Man of the Year award. He earned the Rookie of the Year title during the 2016-17 season with the Milwaukee Bucks and secured the Sixth Man award while playing for the Boston Celtics in the 2022-23 season.

The Knicks publicly acknowledged Brogdon’s contributions with a statement: “Congrats on your retirement, Malcolm! Best of luck in your next chapter.”

Brogdon’s most recent season was spent with the Washington Wizards, where he averaged 12.7 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.1 rebounds in 24 games, including 13 starts. Prior to his time with the Wizards, he played one season each for the Portland Trail Blazers and the Celtics. His career also includes three seasons with the Indiana Pacers from 2019-22, and the first three years with the Bucks, who drafted him in the second round of the 2016 NBA Draft.

Brogdon’s departure marks the end of a notable chapter in his life, filled with achievements and personal growth, allowing him to focus on new beginnings alongside his family and friends.
