Former University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas accepted the prestigious ‘Voice of Inspiration Award’ during an LGBTQ+ event held in Los Angeles on March 15, 2025. The award ceremony celebrated Thomas’s journey as a transgender athlete and his ongoing advocacy for transgender rights in sports.

The event, hosted at the Serra on Vine, featured a video montage that traced Thomas’s transition from competing on the men’s team as William Thomas to his current role in women’s competitions as Lia. It portrayed him as an athlete who has faced significant backlash while striving for acceptance within the sports community. Thomas’s acceptance speech resonated deeply with attendees as he expressed gratitude for the support he received from transgender mentors throughout his journey.

In a striking appearance, Thomas wore a purple dress and stilettos, standing at approximately 6-foot-5. He began his speech by acknowledging the efforts of Rainbow Labs, the event’s sponsor, stating, “Incredible shout out to everybody at Rainbow Labs for bringing me here and putting this all together.” He reflected on his early experiences of realizing he was transgender, admitting that he felt both excitement and fear about embracing his true identity.

At 26 years old, Thomas recounted the challenges he faced when he first came out, sharing, “Being open and out in myself felt like this impossible mountain to climb, and I didn’t know if I had the strength to do it.” He credited his mentors for encouraging him to participate in women’s athletics, which ultimately allowed him to align his identity as a swimmer with his transgender identity.

“It’s only because of so many amazing, amazing trans mentors that I was able to find that strength and that courage to go out and be myself,” Thomas remarked. He emphasized the importance of visibility and mentorship for transgender individuals, particularly in a landscape where their participation in sports is often contentious.

The event included several speakers who highlighted the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ Americans. Daisy Chavez, a spokeswoman for LA Football Club, spoke passionately about the community’s ongoing fight for representation and acceptance in sports. She stated, “Our presence with this club reminds not just the club, the community, but the world that we’ve always been here,” underscoring the historical involvement of the LGBTQ+ community in athletics.

Despite the controversies surrounding his participation in women’s sports, Thomas considers his platform as an influential transgender figure to be a significant aspect of his life’s purpose. He stated, “I owe so much to those mentors before me that it sort of was clear that I had to be that next beacon in a line of torches going back hundreds of years of trans people.”

He expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to serve as a role model for younger transgender individuals, saying, “To be able to be that next light for people is an honor I can’t describe.”

Following the awards presentation, the event reportedly featured entertainment that included performances celebrating LGBTQ+ culture, illustrating the vibrant community spirit.

The recognition of Thomas’s achievements, alongside the advocacy for transgender rights and representation in sports, marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing discussions around gender identity and athletics. As Thomas and others continue to pave the way for future generations, the dialogue surrounding inclusivity in sports remains crucial.
