Officer on Leave Amid Investigation of In-Custody Death in Oakland
URGENT UPDATE: An officer from the Oakland Police Department has been placed on paid administrative leave following a tragic in-custody death linked to a suspect involved in a home break-in. The incident occurred just after 4:15 a.m. on Saturday in the 11000 block of Ettrick Street.
Authorities report that upon arriving at the scene, officers found the individual inside the residence. A brief struggle ensued during the attempt to detain the suspect, who then became unresponsive. Emergency medical responders quickly arrived and transported the individual to a nearby hospital, where the suspect was pronounced dead.
The Oakland Police Department confirmed that the case is under investigation by multiple entities, including the Homicide unit, Internal Affairs Bureau, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. Additionally, the Community Police Review Agency and the Oakland City Police Commission are involved in reviewing the incident.
