Israel Strikes Gaza as Ceasefire Faces First Major Test

Israel conducted airstrikes in southern Gaza on Sunday following claims that its troops were attacked by Hamas militants. This incident marks the first significant challenge to a ceasefire brokered by the United States, aimed at ending over two years of ongoing conflict. According to the Israel Defense Forces, militants fired a rocket-propelled grenade at Israeli soldiers in the Rafah area, leading to retaliatory strikes.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu consulted with the nation’s security leaders before directing the military to take “strong action” against any ceasefire violations. While he emphasized the necessity of a robust response, he did not explicitly threaten to escalate military operations. The Israeli military reported that no injuries occurred as a result of the initial attacks in Rafah, a region designated under the ceasefire agreement.

In a different development, Israeli airstrikes resulted in the deaths of at least six Palestinians in central Gaza, according to health officials from the Hamas-run government. One airstrike targeted a makeshift coffeehouse in Zawaida, while another hit a location near the Al-Ahly soccer club in the Nuseirat refugee camp, killing at least two people and injuring eight others. A third strike in Khan Younis resulted in one fatality.

Israeli military officials confirmed three incidents on Sunday, with two taking place in southern Gaza and one in the north. The military’s updates were noted to be preliminary at this stage.

In a related matter, Israel identified the remains of two hostages handed over by Hamas. The bodies belonged to Ronen Engel, a father of three from Kibbutz Nir Oz, and Sonthaya Oakkharasri, a Thai agricultural worker from Kibbutz Be’eri. Both individuals were believed to have been killed during the initial Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which ignited the current conflict. Engel’s family, including his wife and children, had previously been taken hostage but were released during a ceasefire deal in November 2023.

Hamas has been vocal in accusing Israel of multiple ceasefire violations and has denied involvement in any clashes in Rafah. Meanwhile, discussions are reportedly underway between Hamas and mediators to initiate the second phase of ceasefire negotiations.

Humanitarian Concerns and Ceasefire Negotiations

As the violence continues, the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire. The Israeli military stated that its response to violations of the ceasefire will be significant, targeting Hamas’ military capabilities. The Rafah border crossing, which had been closed since May 2024, remains a focal point for humanitarian aid, with the Palestinian Authority announcing procedures for those wishing to enter or leave Gaza. The reopening of this crossing could alleviate some humanitarian concerns, facilitating medical treatment and travel for Palestinians.

According to the Health Ministry in Gaza, the ongoing conflict has resulted in more than 68,000 Palestinian deaths, though this figure does not differentiate between civilians and combatants. Israel has disputed these numbers without providing an alternative toll. The Red Cross has reported that thousands more individuals are still missing.

Hamas has also indicated that it is prepared to continue negotiations regarding the ceasefire’s second phase, which may involve disarming the group and establishing an internationally endorsed authority to govern Gaza. Spokesman Hazem Kassem stressed the need for a national consensus regarding future governance, asserting that Hamas will not participate in any ruling authority post-conflict.
