Dolphins Coach Mike McDaniel Faces Pressure After Loss to Browns
The Miami Dolphins faced a challenging defeat, losing 31-6 to the Cleveland Browns on October 22, 2023. This loss raises questions about the future of head coach Mike McDaniel, especially as the team struggles with a record of 1-6. Despite the disappointing performance, indications suggest that McDaniel will retain his position through the upcoming trade deadline on November 4.
In a segment on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football,” insider Ian Rapoport provided insight into the Dolphins’ management perspective. He reported that team owner Stephen Ross has confidence in McDaniel, having previously extended his contract, and is not actively seeking to replace him. Rapoport stated, “My understanding early on in the season for the Dolphins and for Mike McDaniel is owner Stephen Ross likes him and believes in him.”
Prior to McDaniel’s comments in a press conference on October 20, a report suggested that Ross was “not looking to” fire McDaniel anytime soon. However, following the loss to the Browns—where the Dolphins committed four turnovers, including three interceptions thrown by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa—some observers have begun to question whether Ross might reconsider his stance.
McDaniel hinted that he may bench Tagovailoa as early as this week due to the quarterback’s struggles. One of Tagovailoa’s interceptions was returned for a touchdown, contributing to the team’s poor performance. Rapoport noted that two key factors could lead to a change in McDaniel’s status: dwindling fan attendance and a perceived lack of player commitment.
If McDaniel remains at the helm through the Dolphins’ next game against the Atlanta Falcons on October 26, it is unlikely he would be dismissed immediately afterward. The Dolphins then face a quick turnaround to host the Baltimore Ravens for a “Thursday Night Football” game on October 30. This tight schedule means players would have limited time to adjust to an interim coach, should a change occur.
As the Dolphins prepare for their next match, the pressure is mounting on McDaniel to turn the season around. A loss against Atlanta could lead to a dismal 1-8 record, casting a shadow over the team’s future and McDaniel’s tenure. The coming week will be crucial for both the team and its head coach as they navigate the challenges ahead.
