Antifa-Aligned Site Closes Amid Trump’s Crackdown on Dissent
A prominent website associated with the anti-fascist movement, known as It’s Going Down (IGD), has announced it will cease operations due to what it describes as a “dire” environment under the administration of former President Donald Trump. This decision marks a significant moment for a platform that has long been a hub for leftist activism and reporting.
In a statement released on March 10, 2024, IGD expressed its inability to continue functioning as a grassroots journalism outlet due to escalating pressures. The group cited the Trump administration’s intensified focus on curbing what it labels as “domestic terrorism” associated with leftist organizations, including Antifa. “As events in the United States have continued to escalate and conditions have grown more dire, it’s clear that IGD does not have the capacity to meet the moment,” the statement read.
The administration’s stance towards Antifa intensified following an executive order issued by Trump on September 22, 2020, which designated the movement as a domestic terrorist organization. This order prompted federal officials to consider racketeering charges against groups involved in politically motivated violence. Just days later, the administration issued a national security memo emphasizing the need to combat organized political violence.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has also taken legal action against individuals linked to IGD. In November 2020, the DOJ named IGD in a criminal complaint against two individuals, Ellen Brennan Reiche and Samantha Frances Brooks, who attempted to sabotage a train track in Washington State. The complaint detailed how the pair left a device intended to interfere with train signals, and a claim of responsibility was later posted on IGD’s platform. Both were convicted of federal crimes in 2021 related to this incident.
IGD has previously highlighted various acts of civil disobedience and vandalism. These incidents include a 2019 event where activists flooded an office of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) attorney in Portland, Oregon, and protests that escalated into violence during anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles, California, in June 2020. Additionally, in 2022, protesters illegally occupied a forest in Atlanta, Georgia, which was the site of a controversial police training facility.
The closure of IGD highlights broader concerns among leftist activists regarding the current political climate. The group expressed apprehension about the consolidation of power within the government and the perceived construction of a police state. “We should all have a sober and clear-eyed view of what is happening,” IGD stated, emphasizing the impact on working-class individuals and activists.
As the landscape for political expression continues to evolve, the implications of Trump’s policies on dissenting voices remain significant. IGD’s decision to close its platform marks a pivotal moment for anti-fascist movements and raises questions about the future of grassroots media in an increasingly polarized environment.
