Randall McDaniel Steps Down from CFP Committee, Returns in 2026
Randall McDaniel, a member of the College Football Playoff (CFP) selection committee, will temporarily step away from his role this fall due to personal reasons but is set to return in 2026. The CFP announced this decision on Monday, indicating that McDaniel’s position will remain vacant for the remainder of the season. This decision is consistent with previous practices, as the committee has operated below its standard of 13 members on four occasions in the past 12 years.
McDaniel’s contributions to college football are significant. The former All-American guard played a crucial role at Arizona State University from 1984 to 1987, where he helped lead the Sun Devils to their first-ever appearance in the 1986 Rose Bowl. His outstanding performance earned him induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008, solidifying his legacy within the sport.
The CFP selection committee is responsible for ranking the top 25 college football teams in the United States and determining their placement in the 12-team playoff bracket. The committee will release its first rankings of the season on November 4, 2024, with the final field to be announced on Selection Day, December 7, 2024. This process is critical in shaping the postseason landscape and determining which teams compete for the national championship.
Despite McDaniel’s absence, the CFP committee is expected to continue its work effectively. The committee’s structure allows for flexibility, and its members are well-equipped to handle the ranking process even with a reduced number of participants. This adaptability is essential as the 2024 college football season progresses, and competitive dynamics shift among teams.
Overall, McDaniel’s temporary departure highlights the balance between personal commitments and professional responsibilities within high-stakes sports environments. His planned return in 2026 ensures that his expertise and experience will continue to benefit the selection committee in future seasons.
