BREAKING: Aspiration co-founder Joseph Sanberg has officially pled guilty to two counts of wire fraud in a federal court in Los Angeles. This urgent development comes as part of a high-profile case tied to an NBA scandal involving the LA Clippers. Each charge could lead to a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

The plea was entered during a hearing on Monday, with sentencing set for February 23, 2026, at 11 a.m. PST. Sanberg’s guilty plea stems from his involvement in a scheme that defrauded investors of a staggering $248 million. His attorney, Marc Mukasey, noted that Sanberg’s actions were driven by his passion for Aspiration, stating, “he loved [Aspiration] and wanted it to do well,” but acknowledged that he “stepped over the line.”

This scandal intensifies scrutiny on the relationship between the Clippers and Aspiration, a green banking company that declared bankruptcy earlier this year. In September 2021, the Clippers signed a $300 million sponsorship agreement with Aspiration, which included a jersey patch deal and signage in their new arena in Inglewood, California. Just months later, Aspiration entered into a $28 million sponsorship deal with Clippers star Kawhi Leonard.

The NBA is currently investigating potential violations of league rules, particularly whether the Clippers and their owner Steve Ballmer conspired to circumvent the salary cap. Notably, in the same month that the sponsorship deal was announced, Ballmer invested $50 million in Aspiration, raising further questions about the legality of financial arrangements.

Following the hearing, Sanberg declined to comment on the ongoing investigation, redirecting inquiries to his attorney, who refrained from addressing whether Sanberg would cooperate with the NBA’s probe being conducted by the law firm Wachtell Lipton, Rosen & Katz.

As this case unfolds, all eyes will remain on the implications for both Sanberg and the LA Clippers organization. The outcome of the sentencing and any potential further developments with the NBA investigation could have far-reaching consequences for the involved parties. Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.
