USC and HopeHealth Launch Alzheimer’s Care Initiative in Orangeburg

A new initiative aimed at improving Alzheimer’s and dementia care has been launched in Orangeburg County, South Carolina. The University of South Carolina (USC) has partnered with HopeHealth to establish the USC Brain Health Network Clinic, which officially opened on October 20, 2023. This collaboration seeks to address the growing cognitive care crisis in the area, which currently ranks eighth among all U.S. counties for the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony at HopeHealth Orangeburg marked a significant milestone for the community. According to HopeHealth, the prevalence of Alzheimer’s among individuals aged 65 and older in Orangeburg is estimated to be 15.2 percent higher than the national average. This makes the establishment of specialized care services particularly critical for residents facing these health challenges.

Edward Behling, Chief Medical Officer at HopeHealth, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, “This partnership ensures our patients are not only seen faster but truly cared for through every step of the journey.” The clinic will provide essential services at the Orangeburg site, including access to a speech-language pathologist, a nurse practitioner, and a dedicated certified community health worker.

In addition to clinical services, the clinic will offer educational resources and screening tools for patients and their families. By providing comprehensive support, the goal is to facilitate early detection and effective management of Alzheimer’s and related dementias, which can significantly impact not just individuals but entire families and communities.

Leonardo Bonilha, Senior Associate Dean of Research at USC School of Medicine and Director of USC Brain Health, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “By partnering with HopeHealth, we are helping ensure Orangeburg County has more tools and support it needs to face these challenges head-on.”

The USC Brain Health program is dedicated to enhancing cognitive care across South Carolina, particularly in underserved areas. This clinic represents the seventh USC Brain Health facility established in such regions, reflecting a commitment to addressing the urgent need for cognitive health services throughout the state.
