Crews from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will close a section of northbound Interstate 5 in San Diego from October 24 to October 27 for essential roadwork. This closure will affect all northbound lanes between Interstate 8 and the Mission Bay Drive on-ramp, with plans to reopen the lanes by 05:00 on Monday, October 27.

During this period, drivers are encouraged to utilize alternate routes to navigate around the closure. Recommended detours include State Route 163, State Route 15, and Interstate 805, which will provide access to northbound I-5.

Details of the Closure and Impact on Traffic

The closure will also affect several on-ramps and off-ramps. The Moore Street on-ramp to northbound I-5 in Old Town will be closed, along with the westbound I-8 Taylor Street on-ramp and the Morena Boulevard off-ramp. Additional closures include the on-ramps at Camino Del Rio West and Sea World Drive/Tecolote Road, as well as Clairemont Drive.

Despite these disruptions, all northbound Metropolitan Transit Service bus routes to La Jolla and University Town Center (UTC) will continue to operate normally. Notably, Bus Route 30 will implement a slight detour from Old Town to La Jolla, while Route 105 from Old Town to UTC will remain unaffected.

Significance of the Roadwork

This closure is part of a series of freeway closures associated with the I-5 Asset Management Project. This initiative aims to enhance existing infrastructure and improve safety along the vital corridor. The project reflects ongoing efforts to maintain and upgrade California’s transportation network, ensuring better service for all road users.

Drivers are advised to plan their journeys ahead of time and stay informed about real-time traffic conditions, as these roadworks may lead to significant delays. For updated traffic information, the FOX 5/KUSI Live Traffic Map is available to assist motorists in navigating the affected areas.
