A 16-year-old girl, recently discharged from the hospital after a battle with Stage 4 cancer, is advocating for her father’s release following his detention by federal immigration agents. Ofelia Torres, who has been undergoing treatment for nearly a year, is deeply concerned for her father, Ruben Torres, who was taken into custody at a Home Depot store in Niles, Illinois, just days after her hospital release.

According to Ruben Torres’ attorney, Kalman Resnick, the 48-year-old has lived in the United States since 2003 and has worked as a painter for the same employer for two decades. Resnick stated that his client is currently being held at the ICE processing facility in Broadview, Illinois. He plans to seek a federal court ruling to secure Ruben’s release later this week.

“Ruben has an absolutely impeccable record in the United States,” Resnick said. “We believe that we can demonstrate to an immigration judge that he’s entitled to stay in the United States with his family and receive what’s called ‘cancellation of removal,’ which will give him a pathway to lawful permanent residence and eventually citizenship.”

The situation has drawn emotional responses from both Ofelia and her attorney, who described the circumstances as “engineered cruelty.” Resnick emphasized that the struggles faced by the Torres family reflect a broader issue affecting many immigrant families across the nation.

In a heartfelt appeal, Ofelia expressed her hopes for her father’s release, stating, “I’m making this video to spread awareness and remind the public that immigrants are humans with families and deserve to be treated with love and respect, just like anyone else.” Her words resonate as she navigates her own health challenges while advocating for her family.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the Torres family’s plight highlights the tension between immigration enforcement and humanitarian concerns, particularly in cases involving vulnerable individuals. The outcome of Ruben Torres’ case may have significant implications not only for his family but for many others in similar situations across the country.
