Flyers Aim for First Road Win Against Senators in Ottawa Showdown
The Philadelphia Flyers are set to pursue their first road victory of the season as they visit the Ottawa Senators on March 15, 2024. After a successful homestand, where they compiled a record of 3-1-0, the Flyers look to capitalize on their momentum. In their previous away games, they suffered narrow losses by one goal, underscoring the importance of this matchup in Canada’s capital.
Owen Tippett has emerged as a key player for the Flyers, scoring two goals in their recent 5-2 triumph over the Seattle Kraken. This performance marks Tippett’s third consecutive game with a goal, bringing his season tally to five in just six games. Last season, it took him 25 games to reach the same number of goals. “I think it makes it easier for that confidence to kind of stick around,” Tippett remarked, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia. “But at the same point, you can’t get too focused on that. You’ve still got to work on our goal here, and playing a complete game with whoever you’re on the ice with.”
As the Flyers prepare for this pivotal game, Tippett aims to extend his career-best goal-scoring streak of four games, a record he set from November 10-18, 2023. Team captain Sean Couturier has praised Tippett’s contributions, emphasizing the importance of offensive synergy. “I think we’ve played together at times in the past, and ‘Tipp’ is hot right now, so just trying to give him the puck and use his shot, his speed,” Couturier commented. “He’s playing really well.”
Adding to the Flyers’ offensive efforts, Trevor Zegras has also been instrumental, extending his assist streak to five games by setting up Noah Cates’ power-play goal during the second period. Zegras is currently tied with Couturier for the team lead in assists, each player boasting five.
In contrast, the Ottawa Senators are struggling, having lost five of their last six games, with a record of 2-4-1. Their most recent match resulted in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Edmonton Oilers. Despite the defeat, defenseman Thomas Chabot expressed optimism about the team’s performance, particularly their resilience in overcoming a two-goal deficit. “We saw the Ottawa Senators tonight,” Chabot stated following the game. “It’s plain and simple: We played to our identity, our game, we put pressure on them all night, and we created chances. Some of them didn’t go in.”
Chabot was a standout performer in the last encounter between these teams in Ottawa, contributing one goal and two assists during a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory on April 13, 2023. Tim Stutzle also played a crucial role in that game, scoring the overtime winner.
The Senators will look to build on their positives as they face the Flyers. Dylan Cozens ignited the Senators’ comeback against the Oilers, scoring just 13 seconds into the third period, marking his fourth goal of the season. This goal extended his scoring streak to three games and his point streak to five games. Meanwhile, Shane Pinto, who leads the Senators with seven goals, was held scoreless for only the second time this season.
As the Flyers and Senators prepare to clash, both teams have much at stake. The Flyers aim to secure their first road win, while the Senators strive to turn their season around and capitalize on their recent performances. The outcome of this matchup will be pivotal as the teams look to establish their momentum moving forward in the season.
