TCU Safety Jamel Johnson Named Semifinalist for Jim Thorpe Award
Jamel Johnson, a safety for the TCU Horned Frogs, has been recognized as a semifinalist for the prestigious Jim Thorpe Award, which honors the nation’s best defensive back in college football. The announcement was made on October 3, 2025, by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and the Jim Thorpe Association. This award takes into account the players’ on-field performance, athletic ability, and character.
The Jim Thorpe Award has been presented annually since its inception in 1986, commemorating the legacy of Jim Thorpe, who was not only a remarkable running back but also excelled in various sports, including baseball and track and field. Thorpe, an Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon and pentathlon at the 1912 Summer Olympics, remains a symbol of versatility and excellence in athletics.
Impressive Performance This Season
This season, Johnson has showcased his skills remarkably. He is currently tied for second in the nation with a total of four interceptions. Additionally, with 62 total tackles, he leads among players with at least four interceptions, highlighting his effectiveness on the defensive side of the game. Johnson is also one of the few Power 4 safeties to achieve over 80 grades in both run defense and tackling, underscoring his all-around defensive capabilities.
Johnson’s nomination also reflects a strong representation from the Big 12 Conference. He stands alongside Antwan Peek Jr., a safety from the Cincinnati Bearcats, as one of only two semifinalists from the conference. Over the past five years, TCU has seen two players, including Tre’von Moehrig, win the award. Moehrig went on to become a second-round draft pick by the Las Vegas Raiders and has since signed with the Carolina Panthers.
Upcoming Dates and Challenges
The finalists for the 2025 Jim Thorpe Award will be announced on November 25 at 11:00 a.m. The winner will be revealed on December 12 at 8:00 p.m. In the meantime, Johnson and the Horned Frogs will have a bye week to prepare for their next game against the Iowa State Cyclones on November 8, with kickoff set for 2:30 p.m. CT at Amon G. Carter Stadium.
As the season progresses, Johnson’s performance will be pivotal for TCU as they aim to maintain momentum in a competitive conference landscape. His recognition as a semifinalist not only highlights his individual talent but also reflects the strength of the TCU football program in developing elite athletes.
