The Utah Board of Higher Education has appointed Dr. Brad L. Mortensen as the new president of Utah State University, effective November 10, 2025. Mortensen’s selection comes after a unanimous vote, marking a significant shift for the university as it prepares for its next chapter. His leadership is expected to emphasize affordability and accessibility in education, values he champions as a first-generation college graduate.

With over 20 years of experience in higher education, Mortensen has a track record of pioneering initiatives. He was instrumental in establishing the first accelerated bachelor’s degree programs within the Utah System of Higher Education. During his tenure as president of Weber State University since 2019, he oversaw the growth of its dual enrollment program, which became the largest among four-year institutions in the United States by 2024.

In a statement quoted by USU Today, Mortensen expressed his gratitude: “It is incredibly humbling and almost unbelievable as a first-generation college graduate to be named president of my alma mater, Utah State University.” His commitment to enhancing educational opportunities aligns with his personal journey and professional ethos.

Under Mortensen’s leadership at Weber State University, he secured nearly $400 million in funding for various academic, athletic, and research facilities. Notable achievements include the founding of the Miller Advanced Research and Solutions (MARS) Center, which has fostered partnerships with legislative, military, and industry leaders.

The Utah Board of Higher Education has voiced strong confidence in Mortensen’s capabilities. Amanda Covington, chair of the board, stated, “Dr. Mortensen is a visionary leader who understands the potential and responsibility of leading USU.” This sentiment was echoed by David Huntsman, co-chair of the Presidential Search Committee, who noted Mortensen’s practical, student-centered approach and deep understanding of Utah’s higher education landscape.

As Mortensen prepares to transition to his new role, the search for an interim president at Weber State University will commence to ensure continuity in leadership. Geoffrey Landward, the Commissioner of the Utah System of Higher Education, praised Mortensen, emphasizing that he is a remarkable leader and a selfless collaborator who always prioritizes students.

As Utah State University embarks on this new era, the appointment of Dr. Brad L. Mortensen signals a promising future, rooted in a commitment to student success and educational accessibility.
