Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts Takes a Tumble During World Series Race
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts fell flat on his face during a light-hearted race with second baseman Hyeseong Kim on March 28, 2024, while preparing for the World Series. The incident occurred during a workout at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, adding an unexpected moment of levity amid serious competition.
Roberts, who is 53 years old, attempted to inject some fun into the practice session by racing Kim. However, while rounding second base, he stumbled and fell, prompting laughter from teammates and onlookers. In a humorous take on his misstep, Roberts remarked, “That will be the last full sprint I ever do in my life.” He later feigned a hamstring injury, showcasing his ability to maintain team morale even after a mishap.
The race was not just a spontaneous moment; it was part of an effort to lighten the atmosphere as the Dodgers faced elimination in the World Series. Teammate Miguel Rojas commented on the situation, saying, “I think he had a better chance going straight from first to third on a straight line.” Rojas appreciated Roberts’ willingness to engage in such antics to relieve tension.
Roberts acknowledged receiving feedback from his family, noting that his children were not particularly enthusiastic about his fall. Despite the tumble, he expressed optimism, stating he was ready to continue participating in team activities. “I got some meds in me. I’m still going to post. I’m probable,” he added, emphasizing his commitment to the team.
Roberts is not only known for his role as the Dodgers’ manager but also for his pivotal performance in the 2004 postseason. He gained fame for a crucial stolen base against the New York Yankees, which helped the Boston Red Sox secure their first World Series title in 86 years.
As the Dodgers prepare for Game 6 of the World Series, Roberts’ light-hearted spirit serves as a reminder of the camaraderie and resilience within the team. The incident has gone viral, capturing both the challenges of competition and the importance of maintaining a positive atmosphere, even in moments of pressure.
