Burr Oak Cemetery Recommended for National Historic Register

The Burr Oak Cemetery, located in Alsip, Illinois, has received a recommendation for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. This cemetery is notably the final resting place of civil rights figure Emmett Till, his mother Mamie Till Mobley, and other prominent figures, including singer Dinah Washington and rapper King Von.

Established in 1927, Burr Oak Cemetery spans 150 acres and currently features approximately 33,000 marked graves. This historic site is particularly significant as it was one of the few cemeteries in the region that served Black residents during a time of racial segregation. It was also the only Black-owned and managed cemetery in the area.

Emmett Till, a 14-year-old African American boy, was lynched in Mississippi in 1955, an event that served as a catalyst for the Civil Rights Movement. His mother, Mamie Till Mobley, became a prominent advocate for civil rights, often using her son’s tragic story to highlight racial injustice. Both are interred in the cemetery, which symbolizes resilience and remembrance for many.

The nomination for national recognition was made by the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council. Typically, once a site receives state recommendations, it is added to the National Register. However, the ongoing federal government shutdown has temporarily stalled this process.

Burr Oak Cemetery joins a list of other notable sites recognized on the National Register, including Bohemian National Cemetery, Rosehill Cemetery, and Graceland. Illinois is home to several significant landmarks, such as Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace and tomb in Springfield, and the renowned Adler Planetarium.

As the nomination moves forward, it underscores the importance of preserving sites that reflect the history and struggles of marginalized communities. Recognition on the National Register not only honors the legacy of individuals like Emmett Till but also promotes awareness of the historical context surrounding their lives.
