Director Dan Trachtenberg Reveals Bold Plans for Predator Sequel
In a recent interview, director Dan Trachtenberg shared his original concept for a sequel to the popular film franchise, Predator. His initial idea featured a Yautja, the alien species known for its hunting prowess, in a World War II setting, specifically targeting Nazis. Trachtenberg described his vision, stating, “The very first nugget of the idea was, what if the Predator wins?” He aimed to create a narrative that would allow audiences to root for the Predator, a departure from the typical slasher film narrative.
Trachtenberg elaborated on his concept, noting, “I really didn’t want it to be a slasher movie where the slasher wins… I was like, ‘Well, I guess he could be, like, set in World War 2, and he’s kicking Nazi butt or something.'” Despite the intrigue of this concept, he ultimately decided against it, believing that it did not offer a fresh perspective.
From WWII to the Far Future
Instead of the historical backdrop, the new film, Predator: Badlands, takes place in a distant future. The story follows the Yautja protagonist, Dek, portrayed by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, who faces exile from his clan. In his quest to redeem himself, Dek reluctantly teams up with a synthetic character named Thia, played by Elle Fanning. Trachtenberg emphasized the importance of crafting a standalone narrative, stating, “Predator: Badlands is a standalone movie and doesn’t connect to 2022’s Prey or 2025’s animated Predator: Killer of Killers.”
While the new film does not directly tie into previous installments, Trachtenberg has included subtle references to the Alien franchise, enriching the cinematic universe. He explained, “It just felt, to me, like there was a way to include things in cinematic universes that are already spiritually connected, and involve them in one story, in one movie.”
Current Reception and Future Prospects
Predator: Badlands is now showing in theaters, and its unique approach has garnered attention from fans and critics alike. Trachtenberg’s vision marks a significant evolution in the franchise, moving away from familiar motifs while still engaging audiences.
