Texas A&M Dominates Missouri, Sends Strong Message to CFP Chair
Texas A&M University (9-0, 6-0 SEC) solidified its status as a powerhouse in college football with a convincing 38-17 victory over No. 22 Missouri (6-3, 2-3 SEC) on November 4, 2023. The Aggies showcased their strength, particularly in the second half, outscoring the Tigers 24-7. This win further emphasizes their dominance in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and raises questions about their current ranking in the College Football Playoff (CFP).
The Aggies’ defense played a crucial role in the game, limiting freshman quarterback Matt Zollers of Missouri to just 77 yards passing. Although Texas A&M allowed a few explosive running plays and two touchdowns, their defensive performance was generally solid. This is noteworthy given that Mack Rhoades, the Chair of the CFP Selection Committee, cited the Aggies’ defensive struggles as a reason for their No. 3 ranking, trailing behind Indiana and Ohio State. The previous game against Arkansas, where Texas A&M conceded over 500 yards in a high-scoring 45-42 win, raised concerns about their defensive capabilities.
Yet, the Aggies responded strongly in recent contests, defeating both LSU and Missouri by a combined total of 45 points while allowing only 17 points and 284 yards on Saturday night.
Defensive Motivation and Standout Performances
After the game, junior linebacker Daymion Sanford reflected on Rhoades’ comments, stating they provided the team with extra motivation. “It motivated us a lot. … Coming into the game, we had a chip on our shoulder,” he said. This determination was evident throughout the match, as the Aggies’ defense effectively contained Missouri’s offensive efforts.
Among the standout performers was junior safety Dalton Brooks, who contributed significantly with six tackles and a crucial sack fumble that led to a touchdown. His performance was highlighted by a remarkable 48-yard run off a fake punt, demonstrating not only his speed but also his ability to contribute in multiple aspects of the game. Brooks described the experience as reminiscent of high school football, saying, “It felt like being in high school” after the play.
In response to the CFP Chair’s comments, Brooks stated, “We just showed we’re a defense that can come out and play. We’re a defense that can do what we need to do.” His sentiments reflect the broader team attitude following their strong showing against Missouri, as they aim to improve their CFP ranking.
Implications for CFP Rankings
With this victory, Texas A&M secured its third consecutive road win, a commendable feat in the challenging SEC environment. The Aggies, who have proven their resilience by overcoming tough opponents, could see a shift in their CFP ranking following their performance, especially after No. 2 Indiana’s narrow win against Penn State.
As the Aggies await the next CFP rankings announcement, their recent performances against top teams underscore their potential to make a significant impact in the postseason. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the committee assesses their progress.
