Leo High School Choir Honors Veterans in Special Ceremony
The Leo High School choir, recently recognized for their performance on America’s Got Talent, delivered a heartfelt rendition during a special Veterans Day ceremony at the school on the South Side of Chicago on November 11, 2023. This annual event brought together alumni who have served in the military, allowing them to reflect on their shared experiences and honor their fellow servicemen.
The choir’s performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” resonated deeply with the veterans in attendance. Among them was James Lewandowski, a Vietnam War veteran who reminisced about his time in the Leo glee club. “I sang bass. I was singing right along with them, and I still hit the notes!” he recalled, his pride evident as he reflected on both his military service and his educational roots.
Alumni Reflect on Their Service
As veterans shared stories, the atmosphere shifted to one of camaraderie and nostalgia. Rich Venkus, another Vietnam War veteran, humorously noted the differences in their military experiences. “He was the airborne guy. He’s one of those crazy people that jumps out of planes. I was Air Force. I was in planes, but there’s no way I’m jumping out of them,” Venkus said, illustrating the bonds formed through shared service.
Many of the attendees were Vietnam War veterans, a common distinction among Leo High School alumni. Lewandowski highlighted the school’s rich military history, pointing to plaques on the walls that commemorate those who served and sacrificed their lives in various conflicts, including World War II and Desert Storm.
Every year, the veterans gather at Leo High School just before Veterans Day to honor their legacy. This year, 75 graduates who served in the military were remembered, with a solemn reading of their names followed by a wreath-laying ceremony. This tradition reinforces the strong bond between the school and its alumni, creating a space for reflection and gratitude.
A Legacy of Service
The ceremony not only commemorated those who made the ultimate sacrifice but also fostered a sense of pride among current students and faculty. As veterans and alumni united in the school’s auditorium, they shared stories of bravery, resilience, and a commitment to their country. The event served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by many and the enduring connection between Leo High School and its military alumni.
As the ceremony concluded, it was clear that the legacy of Leo High School extends far beyond its walls. The shared memories and honored sacrifices continue to inspire future generations, ensuring that the spirit of service remains alive at the institution. This Veterans Day, the Leo High School community came together not only to celebrate their past but also to reinforce their commitment to honoring those who have served.
