Sixers Show Promise in First 10 Games of 2025-26 Season
The Philadelphia 76ers have started the 2025-26 season with a record of 6-4, showcasing significant improvements over last year’s disappointing start. As they prepare to face the Boston Celtics for the third time in just 20 days, the team is displaying a resilience that was lacking in previous seasons. While challenges remain, the overall performance of the Sixers suggests a more competitive spirit this year.
One of the standout players thus far is Joel Embiid, who is averaging 30.3 points per 36 minutes. After a rocky start in the opening game against Boston, where he scored only four points on 1-for-9 shooting, Embiid has rebounded impressively. He has scored at least 20 points in every game since, demonstrating improved driving and foul-drawing capabilities. In the recent win against Toronto, Embiid played for a season-high 25:57 minutes and scored 29 points, further solidifying his impact on the court.
However, Embiid’s presence on the floor does not come without its drawbacks. The Sixers’ defensive rating stands at 126.0 points allowed per 100 possessions when he is on the floor, indicating struggles on the defensive end. While he has shown some improvement as a shot-blocker, his lateral movement has raised concerns among fans and analysts alike. This limitation has led to significant challenges for the Sixers’ defense, particularly in high-pressure situations.
The Sixers are also benefiting from the dynamic play of Tyrese Maxey, who has become a focal point of their offensive scheme. He has scored a total of 332 points across 10 games, making him one of the top scorers in the league. Maxey is not just scoring; he is also contributing as a playmaker, averaging significant minutes on the court. His performance has been crucial, particularly when Embiid takes a breather, as the team’s net rating drops by -11.3 when he is off the floor.
Another emerging talent is rookie VJ Edgecombe, who has quickly established himself as a versatile player. Averaging 16.3 points per game, Edgecombe has also shown his ability to contribute defensively, with several games where he recorded at least four rebounds and four assists. His maturity and adaptability on the court have made him a valuable asset for the team.
The Sixers have also displayed a commitment to rebounding, with an offensive rebounding percentage of 35.6, ranking fourth among NBA teams. This improvement can be attributed to the physicality added to the frontcourt with players like Andre Drummond and two-way forwards such as Jabari Walker and Dominick Barlow. Despite this, defensive rebounding remains a concern, with the team ranking seventh-worst in the league at 67.1 percent.
On the three-point front, Kelly Oubre Jr. has been a consistent performer, boasting a three-point shooting percentage of 38.3 with an average of 6.0 attempts per game. Oubre has started all ten games, contributing both offensively and defensively. His ability to stretch the floor has added depth to the Sixers’ offense, which is crucial as they navigate the challenges of the season.
Despite the promising start, the Sixers have struggled significantly during third quarters this season, with a net rating of -36.3, the worst in the NBA. Coach Nick Nurse has acknowledged the team’s inconsistency during this key period of games, indicating a need for a more focused approach moving forward.
As the Sixers gear up for their upcoming match against the Celtics, they have the opportunity to address these inconsistencies and build upon their early successes. The blend of emerging talent, experienced players, and a commitment to improvement lays a foundation for a more competitive season ahead.
