U.S. Army Veteran Receives Life-Changing Service Dog in Naperville

At a Veterans Day event in Naperville on November 11, 2023, U.S. Army veteran Jim Hertz received a profound surprise—he was gifted a service dog named Rossy, a moment that is set to change both of their lives. For the past four months, Hertz had believed he was training Rossy, an eight-month-old pitbull, to assist another veteran.

Hertz’s journey with Rossy began through K9s for Veterans, a nonprofit organization dedicated to training and providing service dogs to veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). The organization rescues dogs from high-risk shelters and pairs them with veterans in need, ensuring that each service dog becomes a vital companion for their human partner.

“I was like, when he wanted to do it and help out, I was like, OK, but the kids are going to love her,” said Hertz’s wife, Megan Hertz. “This is wonderful. They’re going to be so excited.”

According to Michael Tellerio, President and CEO of K9s for Veterans, the bond formed during the training process is essential. “That dog goes everywhere with the veteran. That dog always has that veteran’s back. He’s never alone. That’s his battle buddy,” he explained.

Hertz was initially under the impression that he would have to part with Rossy, but during the event, he learned that he would be able to keep her. This news brought immense relief, as Rossy has already played a crucial role in managing Hertz’s anxiety. “A room like this is pretty stressful for me right now,” Hertz remarked, reflecting on the crowded environment at the event. “Rossy’s a big help, for sure.”

The American Warrior Initiative, which has been instrumental in helping veterans through the pairing of service dogs, reported that over the past six years, they have assisted 430 veterans nationwide. Each dog represents an investment of approximately $15,000, and the organization has raised more than $6 million to support these efforts. Louise Thaxton, CEO of the American Warrior Initiative, noted the consistent support they receive from various sources, including Fairway Home Mortgage, which contributes nearly $1 million annually through payroll deductions.

Hertz expressed optimism about the future he and Rossy will create together. “I’m trying to get her used to other people and other dogs as well. We still have a long way to go. Just looking forward to what that looks like,” he said, highlighting the ongoing journey they will embark on together.

The American Warrior Initiative announced plans to provide another veteran with a service dog the following day, continuing their mission to support those who have served. This ongoing commitment underscores the vital role that service dogs play in the lives of veterans, offering companionship and assistance in navigating the challenges that arise from their service experiences.
