Islam Makhachev is set to challenge for the welterweight title at UFC 322 on March 16, 2024, against Jack Della Maddalena. Although Makhachev vacated his lightweight championship earlier this year, he remains confident and considers himself a champion. “I feel I’m still champion,” he stated during the pre-fight press conference. “I don’t lose my belt to anyone. I’m just coming to get a second one.”

Chasing a Second Title

Makhachev, who previously established a record with four consecutive lightweight title defenses, is eager to expand his legacy by capturing a second title. Earlier this year, he defended his belt successfully against Renato Moicano at UFC 311. This impressive performance solidified his status in the division, but Makhachev has long aspired to become a dual-weight champion.

After Jack Della Maddalena defeated Makhachev’s friend, Belal Muhammad, to claim the welterweight title, the opportunity arose for Makhachev to make his move. “This is my dream,” he said. “I’m very close to my dream. All my professional career, when I was lightweight champion, my dream was to become a double champion.” He is now just two days away from potentially realizing that dream.

Facing an Unbeaten Challenger

To achieve this goal, Makhachev must overcome Della Maddalena, who comes into the fight with an impressive streak of 18 consecutive victories and is riding high after the best performance of his career. Despite this challenge, Makhachev brings significant confidence to the octagon, bolstered by his recent wins over top fighters, including two victories against Alexander Volkanovski and a win over Volkanovski’s training partner, Dan Hooker.

“Australia, it’s a good place,” Makhachev remarked, reflecting on his experiences in the country. “I was there. I like it. Now it’s 3-0, I will make four.” Should he secure a victory, Makhachev would not only become the 11th two-division champion in UFC history but could also tie Anderson Silva’s record for the most consecutive wins at 16.

While accolades may place Makhachev in discussions about the greatest fighters of all time, he remains focused on the task at hand. “I’m not thinking about this right now. I’m thinking about the belt. I spent all my life just to be champion, and now I’m close to that dream right now,” he expressed.

As UFC 322 approaches, the stage is set for an electrifying showdown between Makhachev and Della Maddalena. The fight promises to be a pivotal moment in Makhachev’s career, and fans worldwide await the outcome with bated breath.
