Cowboys Rally to Victory After Mourning Defensive End Kneeland
The Dallas Cowboys overcame a significant emotional hurdle and a 21-point deficit to secure a dramatic 24-21 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. This win came just days after the team mourned the loss of defensive end Marshawn Kneeland, who passed away on November 6, 2023. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer spoke about how the team united in their grief during a meeting held on November 10, shortly after their bye week.
In a conversation with NFL insider Albert Breer from Sports Illustrated, Schottenheimer detailed the process of healing for the team. “We had a team meeting and we just talked and we laughed and we cried and we cried some more,” he recounted. The team engaged in breakout sessions to express their feelings, emphasizing the importance of connection during a time of loss. “The healing for me started the minute I could put my arms around some of these guys, and tell them I love them and tell them how much I miss Marshawn,” Schottenheimer added.
Kneeland’s death, attributed to an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, cast a shadow over the team. His passing followed a police chase on November 6, and the Cowboys felt the impact deeply. Eleven days later, the team celebrated a 33-16 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, showcasing resilience amidst their grief.
Building Strength Through Adversity
The emotional turmoil seemed to galvanize the Cowboys, particularly on the defensive side of the game. Against the Eagles, the Dallas defense shut out their opponents in the second half, forcing a crucial turnover by Eagles running back Saquon Barkley. Schottenheimer praised the team’s culture, stating, “This locker room is special. This locker room loves one another. This locker room will fight to the end for one another, and Marshawn was a huge part of that.”
Despite earlier struggles in the season, the Cowboys’ defense recently strengthened after the acquisition of defensive tackle Quinnen Williams and linebacker Logan Wilson prior to the trade deadline. The team had faced criticism for their performance from Week 1 through October, but recent results indicate a turnaround. Schottenheimer acknowledged the change, stating, “Our defense up until the bye had really struggled. Obviously, they played really well last week. They played great again on Sunday.”
As of now, the Cowboys lead the NFL with an average of 387.3 total yards gained per game and rank fourth in points scored, averaging 29.1 per contest. The confidence within the team is palpable, especially as they prepare for their upcoming game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Thanksgiving Day.
Looking Ahead
The Cowboys will enter their next matchup as a 3.5-point underdog, according to ESPN BET. The upcoming game presents an opportunity for the team to further solidify their resilience and dedication to one another, a sentiment that has only grown stronger in the wake of Kneeland’s passing.
For those in need of support, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or online at suicidepreventionlifeline.org. The Cowboys’ journey continues as they honor the memory of a teammate who significantly impacted their lives both on and off the field.
