Brush Chamber of Commerce Welcomes Irene Melendez as Executive Director

The Brush Chamber of Commerce has appointed lifelong resident Irene Melendez as its new executive director, marking a significant transition for the organization and the community. Melendez, who graduated from Brush High School in 1979, brings a wealth of local knowledge and experience to her role. She has previously worked in various capacities, including finance manager, staffing manager, and paralegal, showcasing her diverse skill set.

After taking early retirement, Melendez was initially content in her new routine until she learned about the executive director position through a radio announcement. Intrigued, she applied online and was invited for an interview by Travis Way, the Chamber Board President. The hiring process moved swiftly, and within weeks, she secured the position.

Transition and Early Goals

Melendez officially began her role just before the community’s annual Oktoberfest celebration, allowing her to immerse herself in Chamber operations immediately. Her first months were focused on understanding the organization’s structure, listening to members, and familiarizing herself with ongoing programs.

“I’m learning everything,” Melendez remarked, expressing her enthusiasm for the Chamber’s community contributions. Way noted that she has made a strong start and is rapidly adapting to the diverse responsibilities of her position. He emphasized her ability to quickly absorb the various facets of the job, stating, “She’s been catching on quickly. We’ve been really happy with her so far.”

Way also highlighted Melendez’s longstanding relationships within the community as an asset. Her familiarity with local residents and business owners offers her an advantage as she works to further develop the Chamber’s initiatives.

Community Engagement and Upcoming Events

Melendez and her husband, Jamie, who manages the City of Brush sanitation department, have deep roots in the community, raising three children who also attended local schools. Reflecting on her family’s history, Melendez said, “I was raised a Beetdigger, my kids were raised Beetdiggers, and now my grandchildren are Beetdiggers.” This connection underscores her commitment to serving the community.

Known for her passion for customer service, Melendez has always enjoyed engaging with the public, even in roles outside of her administrative career. The Chamber has released its 2026 event schedule, starting with the 23rd Annual Ag Appreciation Dinner & Dance on January 30, 2026, at the Mark Arndt Event Center. This event will include dinner, dancing, and a silent auction to support the Chamber’s scholarship fund for local agriculture and 4-H students.

The upcoming calendar also features notable events such as the Brush Chamber Annual Banquet on March 19, Cinco de Mayo celebrations on May 5, and the Fourth of July Parade from July 2-4. Other community gatherings include the Community Appreciation BBQ on August 4, the Peoples Market on August 12, and the annual Tree Lighting on December 4.
