American oil giant Chemron, with nearly a century of operations in Venezuela, has issued a statement regarding the recent plans announced by the Trump administration for the country’s oil sector. The announcement followed the administration’s assertion that it intends to take control of Venezuela’s oil production, a move that has significant implications for the nation’s economy and stability.

In an email to Newsweek on Saturday, a spokesperson for Chevron emphasized the company’s commitment to safety and operational integrity. “Chevron remains focused on the safety of our people and the integrity of our operations,” the spokesperson stated. The company supports “a peaceful, lawful transition that promotes stability and economic recovery” in Venezuela.

Chevron operates in collaboration with Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), Venezuela’s national oil company, across five production projects both onshore and offshore. According to the company’s website, Chevron is engaged in projects that span approximately 74,000 acres of oil and gas reserves throughout Western and Eastern Venezuela.

During a press conference on Saturday, President Donald Trump declared that the U.S. would take charge of Venezuela’s oil operations. He described the country’s oil industry as a “total bust” for an extended period and indicated plans for U.S. oil companies to invest significantly in restoring the nation’s infrastructure. “We’re going to have our very large United States oil companies, the biggest anywhere in the world, go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure, the oil infrastructure, and start making money for the country,” Trump said.

The President specified that the oil companies would bear the initial costs of repairing Venezuela’s infrastructure and would subsequently be reimbursed for their investments. This plan aims to revitalize the struggling oil sector, which has faced numerous challenges in recent years.

Chevron’s response highlights a cautious approach amidst the shifting political landscape in Venezuela. The company has expressed its willingness to collaborate with the U.S. government during this transitional period, aiming to enhance U.S. energy security while navigating the complexities of operating in a country undergoing significant political change.

As developments unfold, further updates regarding Chevron’s role and the implications of the Trump administration’s plans for Venezuela’s oil industry are expected.
