A new grocery store, El Pueblito Abarrotes and Ice Cream, opens its doors in Mount Greenwood on February 24, 2026, bringing a taste of Mexico to the neighborhood. The store will feature fresh produce, essential ingredients, and a variety of sweet treats, including ice cream and paletas. Located at 10639 S. Pulaski Road, owner Mary Mejia aims to create a community hub rather than just another retail space.

Creating a Neighborhood Hub

The name “El Pueblito,” which translates to “little village,” reflects Mejia’s vision of fostering a welcoming environment. She stated, “I like that name because that’s what I want to be — a neighborhood spot. Not just another store but a neighborhood spot.” The store will be divided into two sections: one dedicated to ice cream, paletas, and milkshakes, while the other will focus on grocery items.

At just 23 years old, Mejia has a deep connection to the community. She grew up in nearby Burbank and has worked at her father’s restaurant, Sunrise Breakfast and Lunch, located just a few doors down. “I really like this area,” she said. “Being in Sunrise, I got to meet a lot of people. Everybody is so nice here.” When a space became available near her father’s restaurant, Mejia seized the opportunity to establish her own business.

Building a Family-Friendly Environment

The store is stocked with a range of products, including canned goods, cooking supplies, and household items like paper towels. Mejia envisions a family-friendly atmosphere where children and pets are welcome. “I thought this would be such a nice place to have something sweet in the neighborhood,” she noted. “A place where kids could come in, the dogs could come in, something family-style.”

Inspired by her father’s entrepreneurial spirit, Mejia has always dreamed of running her own business. “My dad has always been in business. I just grew up around that small family business atmosphere,” she explained. “Watching my dad be an owner, I always thought to myself it would be nice to open something of my own.”

Mejia emphasizes the importance of keeping prices affordable and creating a welcoming space for all. “I want this store to be part of the neighborhood,” she said. “I want everyone to feel comfortable and welcome.”

El Pueblito Abarrotes and Ice Cream will operate from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. After months of preparation, Mejia is eager to welcome customers. “One of the phrases I always say is, ‘I love people.’ I am such a people person,” she remarked. “Even though I can be a little shy at times, I really do love people and interacting with them. So hopefully this can be their go-to place if they are around the area or ever need something.”

With its unique offerings and community focus, El Pueblito Abarrotes and Ice Cream aims to become a cherished part of Mount Greenwood and a delightful destination for residents.
