Culture in Motion Launches in Southern California During GRAMMY® Week
Culture In Motion, an innovative arts and empowerment initiative, officially launched in Southern California on January 23, 2026, coinciding with GRAMMY® Week. Created by The Apollo and artist Kwanza Jones, this national Roadshow aims to engage communities throughout the region, bringing Apollo-inspired cultural programming and transformative experiences directly to local residents.
Empowering Communities Through Cultural Engagement
The Culture In Motion initiative is designed to cultivate cultural exchange and creative expression within Southern California, a region recognized for its vibrant artistic landscape. By transforming local spaces into hubs of creativity, the program emphasizes the importance of community engagement and empowerment.
Each event reflects the diverse voices and histories that characterize Los Angeles and neighboring cities. The program is structured around four key pillars: arts access, community engagement, empowerment, and legacy. This framework ensures that activities are tailored to resonate with the unique spirit of each neighborhood.
Robert Sausedo, President and CEO of Community Build, Inc., highlighted the Roadshow’s mission, stating, “Culture In Motion is the quintessential expression of Kwanza Jones’ SUPERCHARGED movement—elevating culture, expanding human potential, and uplifting humanity. By meeting people where they are, it transforms shared values into a civic asset that strengthens the creative economy.”
Connecting Artists and Communities
The launch during GRAMMY® Week aligns with a significant cultural moment, as artists and cultural leaders converge in Southern California. The initiative channels this collective energy into nonprofit programming focused on enhancing access to cultural experiences beyond traditional venues.
Kwanza Jones, who serves as an Executive Producer of Culture In Motion and is a Board Member of The Apollo, remarked, “Culture doesn’t sit still—and neither do we. This Roadshow invites people to participate and see themselves reflected in what’s possible.”
The program’s inaugural journey will begin with a ceremonial send-off from Harlem, coinciding with the 92nd anniversary of The Apollo. This milestone symbolizes the evolution of the iconic institution from a physical venue to a dynamic cultural experience that reaches beyond its walls.
Michelle Ebanks, President and CEO of The Apollo, emphasized the organization’s longstanding commitment to community engagement, stating, “For more than 90 years, The Apollo has championed community engagement and served as a catalyst for social and civic advocacy. With Culture In Motion, we expand that legacy into new communities, starting in Southern California.”
The initiative is supported by the Kwanza Jones & José E. Feliciano Initiative, underscoring a commitment to fostering cultural enrichment and empowerment across regions.
