Davenport’s Putnam Museum Unveils “Kaleidoscope Odyssey” Exhibit
The Putnam Museum & Science Center in Davenport, Iowa, is set to host the captivating exhibition, “Kaleidoscope Odyssey,” from March 14 through September 7, 2024. This immersive experience features over 24 large-scale kaleidoscopes created by renowned artist and Davenport native Tom Chouteau. The exhibition celebrates the intersection of visual art, science, and optics, inviting visitors into a vibrant world of color and reflection.
Guests will encounter towering kaleidoscopes filled with intricate patterns, stained glass, and light, often incorporating their own reflections into the ever-changing designs. The exhibition emphasizes hands-on exploration, allowing visitors to discover how mirrors, symmetry, and light collaborate to create mesmerizing visual effects. Chouteau’s artistry has graced exhibitions from Japan to New York, and this event marks a significant return to his roots.
A Unique Artist-in-Residence Experience
As the first artist in residence at the Putnam Museum, Chouteau will actively create within the exhibit throughout its duration. Attendees will have the opportunity to watch him work in real time, ask questions, and learn about his creative process. “This exhibit is truly a work in process, and the process is my favorite part of making art,” Chouteau stated. “Each kaleidoscope creates itself, bringing together unexpected objects that somehow find each other and belong.”
The exhibit promises to be a living experience, evolving as Chouteau continues to create. Visitors can expect a whimsical atmosphere, akin to stepping into a fantastical world filled with curiosity and discovery.
Exploring the Science of Kaleidoscopes
In addition to the stunning visual displays, “Kaleidoscope Odyssey” offers deeper insights into the history and science of kaleidoscopes. Historical specimens will provide context for those interested in exploring the topic further. Matt Pulford, Exhibit Development Manager at the Putnam, remarked on the unique nature of the exhibit: “What’s been especially exciting is how it lives at the intersection of visual art and science. Much of the experience is hands-on and driven by free exploration.”
Visitors can look forward to an explosion of color and light, coupled with opportunities to experiment and play. The combination of traditional exhibit content and interactive elements makes this experience distinct from past exhibitions at the museum.
The “Kaleidoscope Odyssey” exhibition will be open to the public at the Putnam Museum & Science Center until September 7, 2024. The museum operates Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursdays until 8:00 p.m., and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission to the exhibit is free with general admission tickets priced between $10 and $12. For further details and ticket purchases, visitors can call (563) 324-1933 or visit the museum’s website at Putnam.org.
