Designer Pocketbook Bingo Tea Party Enlivens Staten Island’s St. George Theatre

The historic St. George Theatre in Staten Island hosted its inaugural Designer Pocketbook Bingo Tea Party on January 17, 2024. Approximately 100 guests, dressed in stylish attire, enjoyed an afternoon filled with elegance and entertainment while supporting the theatre’s arts and community programs.

Attendees were welcomed by theatre co-founders Doreen Cugno and Luanne Sorrentino, who personally greeted each guest, complimenting their tasteful outfits and whimsical hats. The atmosphere was further enhanced by delightful chocolate favors from On Your Mark Chocolatiers, setting a sweet tone for the event.

Unique Experience on Stage

The event combined the charm of a traditional tea party with the excitement of bingo. Guests participated in designer pocketbook bingo, with the added thrill of playing directly on the famed St. George Theatre stage. This unique setting allowed attendees to appreciate the theatre’s recently renovated interior while enjoying catered brunch options, a selection of mocktails, cocktails, fine teas, and light bites.

Live music from Tina Kenny complemented the festivities, while a spirited hat contest showcased the creativity of guests, who arrived in afternoon finery. The contest awarded a prize for the most imaginative hat, adding to the event’s whimsical theme.

Bingo was a highlight, with board member Robert Kasegrande energizing the crowd through his engaging calling style. By the end of the afternoon, attendees had affectionately dubbed him “the Bob Barker of Staten Island,” a title that resonated throughout the event as laughter filled the theatre.

Supporting the Community

The event featured beautifully arranged tablescapes, with centerpieces donated by Flowers by Bernard. Designer pocketbooks served as bingo prizes and raffle items, enhancing the experience for participants. Local supporters contributed to the event’s success, with catering provided by Italianissimo Ristorante and elegant chinaware from Nothing New Antique Thrift Shop, creating a cohesive tea-party atmosphere.

Importantly, every dollar raised during the event was matched 2:1 through the Diamond Matching Grant from the Staten Island Foundation, effectively tripling contributions. This initiative helps ensure the continued vibrancy of the St. George Theatre for future generations.

“Thanks to the Staten Island Foundation, our supporters’ generosity will go further than ever,” Sorrentino stated. “Events like this are about more than fundraising — they’re about bringing people together in joyful, creative ways while preserving the magic of the St. George Theatre,” Cugno added.
