Embark Studios Enhances Arc Raiders with Aggression-Based Matchmaking
Players of the popular game Arc Raiders may have recently noticed a shift in their gaming experience, as developer Embark Studios has introduced an “aggression-based” matchmaking system. This change aims to group players according to their likelihood of engaging in combat, enhancing the overall gameplay dynamics.
During a recent interview with GamesBeat, Patrick Söderlund, CEO of Embark Studios, explained the rationale behind the new matchmaking feature. “First, it’s skill-based, of course, then you have solos, duos, and trios,” he said. “And then we also—since about a week ago—introduced a system where we matchmake based on how prone you are to PvP or PvE.” The system assesses how likely players are to engage in conflicts with others versus focusing on exploration and looting.
The implementation of this feature addresses a common frustration among players who prefer a less combative experience. In games like Arc Raiders, being constantly drawn into firefights can detract from the enjoyment of exploring the environment and completing objectives. By matching players based on their aggression levels, the game aims to create a more balanced experience, where those looking for combat are paired with similar players, while those seeking a more peaceful approach can enjoy their time without frequent interruptions.
Although Söderlund acknowledged that “it’s not a full science,” he emphasized the importance of this adjustment in improving player satisfaction. He noted that there is a “large, hard-to-define middle-ground” that this system seeks to navigate. Players often find themselves in ambiguous situations, which can lead to frustration when their play styles do not align with those of their matched opponents.
Interestingly, during the demonstration, another player joined the game, pleading, “I’m friendly,” highlighting the challenges players face when their expectations do not align with the aggression levels of their opponents. This underscores the potential for frustration in a game where cooperation and competition must coexist.
The introduction of aggression-based matchmaking coincides with the successful launch of Arc Raiders. Released in early 2025, the game has quickly become one of the biggest titles of the year, even amid the competitive landscape posed by franchises such as Battlefield and Call of Duty. As the game continues to evolve, adjustments like these are crucial for maintaining player engagement and community health.
As players sacrifice their characters for lighter loot during expeditions, a lingering question remains: “Was it worth it?” The answer may increasingly depend on how well the game can balance player interactions and enhance the overall experience. With ongoing improvements, Arc Raiders is set to maintain its momentum well into 2026 and beyond.
