Final Fantasy 7 Remake Director Reflects on Changing Gaming Tastes
The gaming landscape is evolving, as evidenced by comments from Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy. In a recent interview with GamerBraves, Hamaguchi expressed his surprise at the shifting preferences among younger developers at Square Enix, many of whom cite Final Fantasy 13 as their favorite entry in the iconic series rather than the classic Final Fantasy 6.
Hamaguchi noted that as new employees join the company, their experiences shape the culture and direction of game development. “The company has been growing and changing as new employees come in and the company just keeps going on,” he explained. For many young players, Final Fantasy 13, which debuted in 2009, served as their introduction to the franchise, overshadowing earlier titles from the PlayStation era.
The linear narrative and streamlined gameplay of Final Fantasy 13 have been points of contention among long-time fans, but for many newcomers, it represents their gateway into role-playing games. Hamaguchi acknowledged that while Final Fantasy 6 remains a standout title, its age—over 30 years—can make it feel distant for younger players.
Each installment from Final Fantasies 6 through 10 marked a significant era in the franchise, offering fresh, immersive adventures. Yet, as Hamaguchi points out, the generational gap in gaming experiences is apparent, with players born in the late 1990s and early 2000s perhaps viewing Final Fantasy 13 as a classic.
While Final Fantasy 13 and its sequels are not readily available on current consoles like the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S, they can be accessed on platforms such as Steam. This absence raises questions about the availability of historically significant games for new audiences. Hamaguchi may have to address this issue after the completion of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, considering the importance of preserving gaming history.
In a related discussion, Hamaguchi shared his belief in the need for diversity in gaming experiences. He stated, “Both action games and turn-based games should evolve for the better,” emphasizing the importance of innovation in engaging a broad audience. As the gaming industry continues to grow and adapt, it remains vital for developers to balance nostalgia for classic titles with fresh, contemporary experiences that resonate with new generations.
The reflection on gaming preferences highlights the importance of understanding how evolving tastes can influence the development of future projects. As younger fans shape the direction of franchises like Final Fantasy, it is clear that the legacy of gaming will continue to grow and change, paving the way for new stories and adventures.
