A Loveland musician is set to mark a significant milestone with a concert at the Rialto Theater Center on January 30, 2024. Gary Schmidt, who has been performing at this venue for two decades, has cultivated a global fan base while sharing his passion for piano music. This year’s concert will feature iconic pieces, including George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” along with selections from renowned composers like Chopin, Debussy, and even some of his own compositions.

Schmidt, who has lived in Loveland for approximately 30 years, reflects on how his journey began. After moving from Canada, he discovered the Rialto and was captivated by its acoustics and community support. “The Rialto is a treasure for the city of Loveland,” he noted, emphasizing the venue’s role in his musical career. Initially, Schmidt had to bring his own piano to the theater, as the venue lacked the space to store one. However, his first concert was a success, leading to a cherished annual tradition.

Over the years, Schmidt has expanded his repertoire. Early performances primarily centered on classical music, as he was hesitant to compare his compositions with those of legendary figures like Beethoven. As his confidence grew, he began sharing his original works, which have resonated with audiences seeking relaxation and contemplation. In recent years, his music has been streamed extensively, achieving over 1 million streams on Pandora.

The accessibility of his music has been transformative. “At any moment, 24 hours a day, someone is listening to my music,” he shared, highlighting the significance of streaming platforms like Spotify and Pandora in broadening his reach. Schmidt’s music has found listeners in over 170 countries, a testament to the global appeal of his style, which often blends classical and meditative elements.

Schmidt’s passion for music began at the tender age of six when he first heard a piano record. With limited access to formal lessons, he taught himself and eventually gained admission to the prestigious Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. His motto, “Enhancing life thru music,” reflects his belief in the power of music to enrich everyday experiences.

In addition to performing, Schmidt is dedicated to teaching piano, passing on his knowledge and passion to the next generation. He also maintains a love for the outdoors, having worked as a rock climbing guide, which further connects him to the beautiful landscapes surrounding Loveland and the Rocky Mountain National Park.

As the 20th anniversary concert approaches, Schmidt is excited to share his extensive musical journey with the Loveland community once again. The concert will take place at 7:30 PM on Friday, January 30, at the Rialto Theater Center, located at 228 E. Fourth St. Tickets are available for $25 through the venue or on Schmidt’s official website, garyschmidtmusic.com.

This upcoming performance not only celebrates two decades of artistic expression but also reinforces Schmidt’s enduring connection to Loveland and his commitment to enriching lives through music.
