Sandfall Interactive Prioritizes Quality Over Size in Game Development
Following the success of its debut title, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Sandfall Interactive has made it clear that it does not intend to expand significantly. In an interview with Edge Magazine for its latest issue, creative director Guillaume Broche and lead programmer Tom Guillermin discussed their philosophy on game development and team size.
The studio’s focus remains on delivering quality games rather than increasing its workforce. “No, I think it’s good to have limitations when you are creative,” Broche stated when asked if their next game would be larger than Expedition 33. He emphasized the importance of a manageable team structure, noting, “We could scale up now we have a lot more money, but I would say it’s not tempting for us.”
Broche’s sentiments reflect a deliberate choice to maintain a close-knit team dynamic. He added, “We love making games more than we love managing, so we want to keep doing that.” This commitment to quality over quantity has resonated within the industry, as veteran game developer Adrian Chmielarz recently expressed his surprise at the success of Expedition 33, stating his “world view is ruined” upon learning it was created by a relatively inexperienced team.
Team Dynamics and Future Plans
Guillermin echoed Broche’s thoughts on team dynamics, highlighting the advantages of their current size. “In terms of team dynamics, everybody knows everybody in the team, and people are used to working together,” he explained. The success of their initial project has provided a strong foundation, and the team is content with their current structure. “Expanding for the sake of expanding is not our vision,” he noted.
The duo’s approach contrasts with larger studios that often employ vast teams. “Our vision is to ship quality games, and we don’t believe you need to have a lot of people to do that,” stated Guillermin. This philosophy underpins their strategy moving forward, as they focus on refining their existing processes rather than increasing headcount.
As the gaming industry continues to evolve, Sandfall Interactive represents a refreshing perspective, prioritizing creativity and collaboration over sheer numbers. The success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 serves as a testimony to the effectiveness of this model, proving that a smaller, dedicated team can achieve remarkable outcomes without the pressure of expansion.
The studio’s commitment to maintaining a balanced work environment is evident, with both Broche and Guillermin expressing their desire to keep the joy of game-making at the forefront. As they look ahead, their strategy remains focused on quality, ensuring that each project reflects their vision and values.
