Bodybuilder Eugene Teo Transforms Life Through Mindful Movement
Eugene Teo, a former competitive bodybuilder, has transformed his fitness journey from extreme muscle building to a focus on mindful movement. At the age of 34, Teo reflects on his early obsession with bodybuilding, which began when he was just 13 years old. Seeking validation and confidence, he dedicated years to lifting weights, often spending up to four hours a day training to achieve the ideal physique.
Living on the Gold Coast, Australia, Teo’s pursuit of the perfect body came with significant sacrifices. He followed strict and often unsafe protocols, including extreme dehydration before competitions and a rigid diet. His meals consisted mainly of foods deemed “clean” by the bodybuilding community, such as sweet potatoes, brown rice, broccoli, and boiled chicken breast. The pressure to maintain his physique led him to skip celebrations like his own birthday and even bring scales to family dinners to weigh his food.
Teo’s intense focus on bodybuilding resulted in negative body image and social isolation. “The driving force behind my bodybuilding was negative body image and confidence issues,” he explains. His mother frequently questioned his dietary choices, wondering why he wouldn’t enjoy her cooking. Despite achieving a muscular physique, Teo often felt dissatisfied and critical of his body, unable to enjoy life outside the gym.
As years passed, Teo realized that his body was not functioning optimally. Despite lifting heavy weights and looking impressive, he struggled with everyday tasks. “I could lift a lot of weight. I looked exceptional, but I was out of breath from simple tasks,” he notes. Walking across the gym caused lower back pain, and even tying his shoes became a challenge. This prompted a significant shift in his approach to fitness.
Shifting Focus to Mobility and Well-Being
Recognizing the need for change, Teo began to prioritize mobility, power, and cardiovascular endurance over sheer muscle size. He incorporated activities such as running, stretching, jumping, and cycling into his routine. This shift allowed him to engage in a more balanced and fulfilling fitness lifestyle. He began questioning whether his previous extreme mindset was contributing to his happiness, ultimately realizing that it was an obsession that brought him little joy.
Today, Teo’s focus has shifted away from the rigid demands of bodybuilding to a more holistic approach to fitness. As a fitness coach on YouTube and the founder of the Ganbaru Method fitness app, he emphasizes the importance of relationships and overall well-being. He no longer trains every day and adopts a more relaxed attitude toward his diet. “If I’m out with my daughter and she wants an ice cream, I’ll have one with her,” he shares, highlighting a newfound balance in his life.
Teo has experienced physical changes as well. He has lost approximately 15 kg of muscle since his competitive days but feels more athletic and capable than ever. He can now run 5 km in just 22 minutes, a significant improvement compared to his initial time of 40 minutes during his competitive years. “Ten years ago, my body was capable of turning heads on the street,” he recalls. “That was fun – but it was the only thing it was capable of. Now, it’s built for function.”
Teo’s journey serves as an inspiration for many who struggle with body image and the pressures of fitness culture. His experience underscores the importance of finding a healthy balance that promotes not only physical strength but also emotional well-being. Through his work, he aims to encourage others to embrace a more mindful approach to movement and fitness, prioritizing health over appearance.
