Residents of Montgomery are invited to enhance their understanding of colon cancer prevention at a free Lunch & Learn event organized by the Community Health Improvement Network (CHIN), part of The Montgomery Institute. The session is scheduled for March 26, 2026, at noon, taking place at NorthPark Church, located at 7770 Highway 39 North. While the event is open to the public, attendees must RSVP by March 24 to secure their spot.

The Lunch & Learn will feature Dr. Thomas Barry Calvit, a gastroenterologist, who will address critical aspects of colon cancer prevention and the significance of early detection. Colon cancer ranks as the third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths among both men and women in the United States. Despite its prevalence, it is one of the most preventable forms of cancer.

“Colon cancer is preventable since it typically develops from polyps that can be detected and removed before they become cancerous,” Dr. Calvit stated. He emphasized that colon cancer originates in the large intestine and can be effectively managed through proactive measures.

The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of regular screenings and education within the community. Beverly Knox, President of CHIN, highlighted the crucial role of community initiatives in combating colon cancer. “Colon cancer is one of the few cancers that can often be prevented through early screening and awareness,” Knox noted. “By educating our community about prevention and encouraging regular screenings, we can help save lives.”

To participate in this informative session, interested individuals should RSVP by contacting Knox at 601-483-2661 before the deadline. Engaging in discussions about health and prevention is vital, and this event represents a significant opportunity for residents to learn more about safeguarding their health.
