Community Mourns Loss of Beloved Michael Schliebe at 70

Michael Edward Schliebe, a cherished husband, brother, and friend, passed away on December 7, 2025, at the age of 70 after a brief battle with esophageal cancer. He died peacefully at his home in Puyallup, Washington, surrounded by his loving wife, Cyndy. His death has left a significant void in the lives of those who knew him.

Born on January 29, 1955, in Long Beach, California, Michael was the son of Milton Edward and Shirley Ann Schliebe (Davis). He grew up in a family that valued faith, attending First Lutheran Church in Long Beach, where he actively participated in various ministries. Known for his exceptional singing voice, Michael contributed to the church choir and played a pivotal role in leading handbell performances. He was also an integral part of church leadership boards and served as treasurer for many years.

Michael’s relationship with Cyndy Wick began in 1971 when they met at First Lutheran Church. Their friendship blossomed through shared church activities, leading to their marriage in 1979. For the next 37 years, they made Long Beach their home, creating lasting memories together.

In 1986, Michael transitioned from a successful career at McKesson Office Supplies to join the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. He quickly became a valued member of the Lomita Sheriff’s Station, where he held various positions and ultimately settled into the role of early morning dispatcher and watch deputy. After nearly three decades of dedicated service, he retired in 2016.

Following his retirement, Michael and Cyndy moved to the Pacific Northwest, where he discovered a passion for golfing and curling. He took a “learn to curl” class and found himself captivated by the sport, participating in curling events on many Friday nights. Michael was also an avid SCUBA diver and snow skier, often featured in “Ski Talk” videos produced by the Lutheran Men’s Beer Drinking League.

Traveling was a significant part of Michael’s life. He and Cyndy explored North America extensively and enjoyed ocean cruises, including a memorable National Geographic trip to Antarctica. One of his last adventures involved participating in the “Polar Plunge,” where he and Cyndy jumped into the frigid waters off the coast of Antarctica, an experience they cherished.

Michael is survived by his wife, Cyndy; his brother, Steve; his sister, Kim Biondo (Vito); and several nieces and nephews. He will be remembered for his infectious laugh and warm smile, which touched the lives of many.

As First Lutheran Church has closed its doors, a memorial service for Michael will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church, located at 4644 Clark Avenue, Long Beach, California, on January 10, 2026, at 13:00. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to organizations such as Samaritans Purse, Tunnel to Towers, or the Wounded Warriors Project.

Michael Schliebe’s legacy of faith and joy in life will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. He is now at peace, embraced by the presence of God.
