Community Mourns Loss of Cheryl Portman, Beloved Family Figure

Cheryl Portman, a cherished member of the St. Joseph community, passed away on November 28, 2025, nearly two years after her diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Born on July 14, 1958, Cheryl was known for her kindness, humor, and dedication to her family. Her legacy will continue through her children and grandchildren, who were her greatest joy.

Cheryl graduated from Lafayette High School in 1976 and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree from Missouri Western State University and an MBA from William Woods University. She married Patrick Portman on April 18, 1980, and together they raised two children, Megan and Trevor. After Patrick’s untimely passing in 2008, Cheryl found love again and married Rodney Grayson on June 18, 2022. The couple embraced family life, welcoming Rodney’s children and grandchildren into their home.

Cheryl’s professional journey included a significant tenure at Quaker Oats until its closure. She later joined Mosaic Health System, where she worked in Human Resources and as a Physician Recruiter. Her dedication to her work was matched by her passion for travel, during which she visited 45 states and several countries, creating lasting memories with friends and family.

A devoted fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, Cheryl held season tickets for over 25 years. She and Rodney enjoyed attending games with friends, including an annual tradition of traveling to away games. Despite her illness, Cheryl remained active in her family and community, often expressing a desire for more time with her beloved grandchildren.

Cheryl is survived by her husband Rodney, her children Megan Moore (Caleb) and Trevor Portman (Ashton), and 12 grandchildren. She also leaves behind her sisters Pam Hackathorn (Darrell) and Carol Ferguson, along with numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Preceding her in death were her first husband Patrick, her parents, brother Steve Gillett, and nephew Ray Dydell.

Arrangements for Cheryl’s memorial services have been made at the Heaton-Bowman-Smith-Sidenfaden Chapel in St. Joseph. A visitation is scheduled for December 4, 2025, from 16:00 to 19:00, followed by a Celebration of Life on December 5, 2025, at 15:00, officiated by Pastor Doug Walter at Frederick Boulevard Baptist Church, located at 5502 Frederick, St. Joseph, MO 64507.

Cheryl Portman’s warmth and spirit will be profoundly missed by all who knew her. Her life serves as a reminder to cherish loved ones and to seek comfort in faith during difficult times.
