Daily Iced Beverages Linked to Health Issues: New Insights from TCM
A woman in Taiwan experienced significant health issues after consuming iced coffee daily, leading her to seek treatment at a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) clinic. She reported gastrointestinal discomfort, including abdominal pain, bloating, and occasional diarrhea, along with skin problems like eczema and rashes.
Dr. Li Ying-da, a TCM practitioner at Cihang TCM Clinic, recommended that she avoid cold foods and beverages. He prescribed a treatment plan aimed at warming her digestive system. Following this regimen, the patient reported improvements in her symptoms.
According to TCM principles, the body’s energy is categorized as “yin” (cold) and “yang” (warm). Dr. Grace Zhang, a TCM practitioner at Northern Medical Center in New York, explained that yang energy signifies the body’s internal warmth, vitality, and immune functionality. Regular consumption of iced beverages can lead to the depletion of this vital yang energy.
As the body attempts to warm the cold drinks for digestion, it expends its energy reserves, potentially leading to weakened digestive capabilities. This may result in various health issues, including respiratory problems, a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, decreased immunity, and increased susceptibility to fatigue and illness over time.
Dr. Zhang emphasized the importance of awareness regarding the effects of consuming iced drinks. She noted that while enjoying cold beverages occasionally is generally acceptable, regular consumption may disrupt the balance of yin and yang in the body.
Patients with ongoing digestive discomfort or skin issues may benefit from evaluating their dietary habits, particularly their intake of cold foods and beverages. Dr. Li’s case highlights the potential connection between lifestyle choices and overall health, reinforcing the need for a balanced approach to diet.
As more individuals seek natural remedies and holistic approaches to health, TCM offers valuable insights into the impact of diet on bodily functions. The experience of the patient from Taiwan serves as a reminder of how everyday habits can significantly affect one’s health.
Understanding the relationship between diet and health can empower individuals to make informed decisions about their food and beverage choices. This case underscores the need for ongoing education on the effects of dietary practices and the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle for optimal health.
