The City of Hillsboro’s Cultural Arts District is fostering creative expression as a means to enhance wellness among its community members. Various programs and classes are designed to integrate artistic practices with mental and physical health benefits, emphasizing the transformative power of art.

Art as a Pathway to Wellness

Julio Badel, the Cultural Arts and Outreach Supervisor for Hillsboro Parks & Recreation, highlighted the significant role that art plays in mental health. He stated, “Art has the ability to release stress, emotion, energy, and create meditative mindsets.” This sentiment reflects a growing recognition of art as a therapeutic tool that can facilitate emotional release and personal reflection.

At the Walters Cultural Arts Center, residents can participate in a variety of classes, including yoga, ceramics, and painting. These offerings are designed to blend creativity with wellness, allowing individuals to explore art in a supportive environment.

Innovative Therapeutic Approaches

Further enhancing the intersection of art and mental health is Kara Kazemba, owner of Ancora Wellness Center located on Lincoln Street. Kazemba specializes in combining art with therapy, offering innovative services like ecotherapy and art therapy. She emphasizes the importance of creativity in today’s fast-paced world, remarking, “In a culture that often pushes productivity over creativity, making space for art is a radical act of self-care and protest; one that affirms our wholeness.” This approach underlines the need for mindfulness and self-care through creative practices.

Additionally, the Cultural Arts District provides nature-inspired art classes led by Elizabeth Higgins. These sessions aim to connect participants with their surroundings while cultivating artistic skills. The Hillsboro Community Senior Center also plays a vital role in promoting creative activities tailored for older adults. Programs such as Canvas and Coffee and Material Girls encourage artistic engagement in the senior community.

Melissa Thompson, the manager of the senior center, noted, “Art and creativity are essential to healthy aging,” reinforcing the importance of such programs in supporting well-being among older residents.

Through these initiatives, Hillsboro’s Cultural Arts District is not only enhancing the community’s artistic landscape but also prioritizing mental and physical health. By offering diverse and accessible opportunities for creative expression, the city is paving the way for a healthier, more engaged populace.
