Mets Shortstop Francisco Lindor Faces Injury Concerns Ahead of Season
New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor is facing potential setbacks as he experiences soreness in his left hamate bone. This issue may require evaluation for a stress reaction, as confirmed by David Stearns, the team’s President of Baseball Operations. Such a diagnosis could jeopardize Lindor’s availability for the Mets’ season opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates on March 26, 2024.
Lindor, who has been a reliable player during his tenure with the Mets, is scheduled for a further evaluation on Wednesday. The outcome of this assessment will determine whether surgery is necessary. Should he require surgery, the standard recovery period is approximately six weeks, which would coincide closely with the start of the Mets’ season.
The Mets have been proactive in restructuring their infield ahead of the new season. Lindor’s absence would compel the team to make significant adjustments. He has not missed a game due to injury since joining the Mets in 2021 and has consistently played in at least 152 games over the past four seasons. He signed a substantial 10-year, $341 million contract with the club in April 2021, further highlighting his importance to the team.
Last season, Lindor played in 160 games, posting a batting average of .267 with 31 home runs, 86 RBIs, and 31 stolen bases. His performance earned him a spot on the National League All-Star team, and he finished 10th in NL MVP voting.
The Mets have made notable changes to their infield, signing Bo Bichette to play third base and acquiring Marcus Semien for second base, along with signing Jorge Polanco to play first base. Bichette, primarily a shortstop, has never played third base in his professional career, while Polanco has limited experience at first base. If Lindor is unable to take the field on Opening Day, the Mets may opt to move Bichette to shortstop or promote top prospect Ronny Mauricio.
As the Mets prepare for the upcoming season, Lindor’s injury adds a layer of uncertainty. Fans and analysts alike will be closely monitoring the results of his evaluation, as his participation could significantly impact the team’s performance.
