Poor Communities in England Face Higher Emergency Care Needs for Lung Issues

Research has revealed a troubling disparity in emergency care needs for lung conditions among different socioeconomic groups in England. Analysis of data from NHS admissions in November 2023 by Asthma + Lung UK indicates that individuals from the most deprived areas are significantly more likely to require emergency hospital admissions for serious lung issues compared to their wealthier counterparts.

The findings show that people from low-income backgrounds are 56% more likely to be admitted for emergency care. Furthermore, they face a 62% higher chance of being readmitted within 39 days of an emergency admission, a statistic that raises concerns about increased mortality risk. The study highlights that residents in the poorest regions are nearly twice as likely to be hospitalized for respiratory conditions.

Emergency Admissions and the Impact of Deprivation

The analysis points to specific regions with the highest rates of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) admissions, including Blackpool, Manchester, Hastings, and Burnley. COPD, which encompasses diseases like chronic bronchitis and emphysema, contributes to over 20,000 deaths annually in England.

Dr. Hugo Farne, a respiratory consultant at Imperial College London, emphasized the need for urgent attention to these disparities. He stated, “The fact that nearly half a million respiratory admissions could be avoided each year if deprivation gaps were closed should be a wake-up call.” Dr. Farne advocates for timely diagnosis and increased access to support services, underscoring that these essential resources are often lacking in the areas most affected by lung diseases.

Sarah Sleet, chief executive of Asthma + Lung UK, echoed these concerns, noting that many patients currently hospitalized due to flu complications are likely to have pre-existing lung conditions, particularly among lower-income groups. She remarked, “Poor housing, smoking, and exposure to air pollution put someone at higher risk of developing COPD but deprivation determines the progression of the disease too.”

Call for Comprehensive Strategy to Address Inequities

The root of the problem lies in delayed diagnoses and inadequate care. Vital diagnostic tests are often unavailable in parts of the country, especially in poorer, densely populated areas where health services are under the most pressure. As a result, these communities struggle to provide necessary lung health testing and basic care.

“Lung health is in a critical state in this country, and we know what changes need to be made,” Sleet stated. “They just need implementing – which is why we need a dedicated national strategy to improve respiratory outcomes.”

Previous analyses of NHS data have highlighted that serious respiratory conditions like COPD have consistently led to more emergency admissions than any other medical issue. As the NHS braces for its toughest winter yet, with a rise in flu cases, the urgency for addressing these disparities becomes even more pressing. According to NHS England data, an average of 3,140 people were hospitalized daily with flu by the end of the previous week, marking an 18% increase from the week before.

The findings from Asthma + Lung UK serve as a critical reminder of the pressing need to address health inequalities, particularly in respiratory health, which disproportionately affect those in deprived areas. The call for a unified approach to tackle these issues is more vital than ever as the NHS faces mounting challenges.
