Efforts to enhance the self-determination of young people with intellectual disabilities (ID) are underway, led by researchers from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC). This initiative aims to empower adolescents by improving their decision-making and goal-setting capabilities, fostering independence, and nurturing self-confidence. The significance of this research is underscored by the estimated prevalence of ID, affecting between 0.7% and 1.5% of individuals in developed countries, which translates to over 400,000 people in Spain alone.

The term intellectual disability encompasses a range of challenges in cognitive functioning and learning, typically evident before the age of 18. It can stem from various factors, including genetic and environmental influences. According to Sergi Fàbregues, a researcher at UOC’s Nutraliss group, many families struggle with the concept of self-determination, often conflating it with autonomy.

Innovative Research Methodology

The research paper titled “Development of a family-centered intervention to support self-determination in adolescents and young adults with intellectual disability in home environments: Protocol for a multistage mixed methods design” was published in PLOS One. It outlines a novel international methodology aimed at creating an evidence-based intervention. This approach will equip families and professionals with effective strategies to enhance self-determination among youths with ID.

To engage in this study, researchers will recruit families with adolescents aged between 16 and 22 years who have mild to moderate support needs and are enrolled in special education schools. The study is structured into three stages: the first involves structured interviews and the use of photo-elicitation techniques to understand family dynamics in supporting self-determination; the second stage consists of collaborative mapping sessions where young people, families, and professionals identify practical strategies; and the final stage focuses on designing a tailored intervention.

Family Involvement is Key

Previous studies indicate that enhancing self-determination can significantly improve the quality of life for individuals with ID, affecting academic achievement, emotional health, and job prospects. Self-determination enables these young people to make informed choices, set personal goals, and understand the consequences of their actions. Fàbregues emphasizes that family involvement is crucial for fostering these skills.

Families play a pivotal role in shaping behaviors and decision-making from early childhood. They can help children develop vital skills such as problem-solving and self-advocacy. Effective strategies include creating supportive environments, providing choices, and encouraging independence through everyday decisions. For instance, allowing adolescents to select meals or decide on family activities can significantly bolster their self-determination.

During the initial interviews, families will capture photographs of situations that promote their children’s self-determination. This method, known as photo-elicitation, facilitates detailed discussions on specific examples, aiding in the identification of strategies that will inform the intervention design.

The project is already underway, with 15 families interviewed to date. The goal is to produce a practical guide for families over the next year, aimed at demystifying self-determination and providing actionable strategies. The findings will also be used to assess the effectiveness and acceptance of the intervention among families.

This research initiative has been registered in the Open Science Framework, ensuring transparency and accessibility for future studies. The involvement of multiple institutions, including Memorial University of Newfoundland, Universidad del Norte, University of Navarra, University of Zaragoza, Comillas Pontifical University, University of Deusto, and University of Barcelona, underscores the collaborative effort to improve outcomes for young people with intellectual disabilities.

By focusing on self-determination, this initiative seeks to empower adolescents with ID, fostering an environment where they can thrive and navigate their futures with confidence.
