Warning from Top Investor: U.S. Innovation Faces Major Risks
At the annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference, which kicked off this week, leading biotech investor Noubar Afeyan issued a stark warning about the potential consequences of a backlash against science in the United States. In a letter from his company, Flagship Pioneering, Afeyan cautioned that such backlash could severely undermine U.S. life expectancy and significantly hinder biotech innovation, granting China a strategic advantage in both scientific and economic arenas.
Afeyan’s letter, unusually political for a figure in venture capital and drug development, does not name specific individuals but alludes to the reductions in research funding during the Trump administration and controversial statements made by officials, including U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr..
Abivax’s Stock Surges Amid Takeover Speculation
In the same vein of noteworthy developments, shares of Abivax, a French biotechnology firm, soared by as much as 31% in early trading on March 3, 2024, fueled by speculation regarding a potential takeover by pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly. Reports indicate that Eli Lilly may be prepared to offer $17.5 billion for Abivax, which is poised for a crucial year ahead with several clinical trial outcomes expected for its experimental drug, obefazimod.
According to Bloomberg News, discussions are contingent on guidance from the French Finance Ministry regarding whether the acquisition would be subject to foreign investment regulations. Marc de Garidel, CEO of Abivax, revealed that a review by French authorities typically takes about three months, though he refrained from confirming if discussions with Eli Lilly had taken place.
As the conference progresses, these developments highlight the intersection of politics, investment, and biotechnology, underscoring the challenges and opportunities facing the sector in an increasingly complex landscape. The implications of Afeyan’s message and the unfolding situation with Abivax could resonate well beyond the walls of the conference, affecting the future of innovation and investment in the biopharma industry.
