Broncos Superfan ‘Orange Vader’ Reflects on a Decade of Passion
James Chavez, famously known as Orange Vader, has captured the hearts of football fans in Denver, Colorado, for over two decades. This year marks the tenth anniversary of his recognition as the Denver7 Sports Fan of the Week, a title earned just before the AFC Championship game in 2013. During that memorable matchup, the Denver Broncos secured a narrow victory against the New England Patriots with a score of 20-18.
A Fan’s Journey
Chavez’s transformation into Orange Vader began as a spontaneous decision. “It was just an accident,” he shared in an interview with Denver7 Sports Director Lionel Bienvenu. Initially dressing as Darth Vader for a costume contest, Chavez took the outfit to a Broncos game, where friends suggested they paint it in the team’s colors. The iconic name “Orange Vader” was born that day, and it has since become synonymous with Broncos fandom.
Reflecting on his journey, Chavez expressed excitement about the upcoming game. “Oh, I’m excited, I’m motivated,” he stated, drawing parallels to ten years ago. “It’s like déjà vu, this is happening again. The same thing, ten years later. I’m feeling that excitement. I mean, goosebumps. It’s getting wild again.”
Connecting with Fans
Chavez’s enthusiasm resonates with many fans across Broncos Country. His presence at games has become a staple, embodying the spirit of dedication and passion that defines the team’s community. Bienvenu revisited Chavez’s home to capture his thoughts ahead of this Sunday’s AFC Championship game, where the Broncos are set to face the Patriots once more.
The bond between Chavez and the Broncos, as well as with fellow fans, reflects a shared love for the game and the team. As the championship approaches, the anticipation builds, not just for the match but for the memories and experiences that come with being part of Broncos Country.
This remarkable story of a football fan highlights the importance of community and tradition in sports. For many, it’s not just about the game; it’s about the connections made along the way. As Chavez prepares for the upcoming AFC Championship, his journey serves as a reminder of the vibrant culture surrounding the Broncos and the enduring spirit of its fans.
