A church in Chicago is urgently appealing for toy donations to support children in need this upcoming holiday season. Another Chance Church, located in the Roseland neighborhood, is facing a significant shortfall in its annual toy drive, with approximately 9,000 toys needed to reach its goal of 30,000 for the 2025 holiday season.

Keith Whitfield, a member of the church, expressed his concerns regarding the lack of contributions. “I felt bad that I wasn’t able to get my grandson something that he wanted,” he stated. Whitfield emphasized the importance of the toy drive, recalling how his family benefited from the generosity of the church’s previous efforts. “We all came up here, and he was able to get the toy. It just made me feel good,” he said.

The church’s 14th annual Operation Cover Chicago initiative has been a beacon of hope for many families. Pastor Kenyatta Smith articulated the gravity of the situation, stating, “Right now, that’s in danger. Thousands of children around the city of Chicago may not get any gift for Christmas.” He noted that external factors such as the economy, tariffs, and inflation have made it increasingly difficult for people to donate. “Fifty dollars will get the chance to change the life of one child,” Smith added.

In previous years, the toy drive has seen hundreds lining up for hours, traveling from as far as Indiana and Wisconsin. The church aims to provide toys for children aged 3 to 15, ensuring a diverse selection. “We strive to have toys for each age range and a larger array of toys,” explained Ashley Washington, a representative from Operation Cover Chicago.

Volunteers, including Margaret Wooten, are rallying the community to support the cause. “We are each other’s keepers, and we can no longer walk around like it’s all about us. Because it’s not. It’s all about the people that we serve,” she said.

The church encourages both toy and monetary donations, which can be made in person or online. The toy giveaway is scheduled for December 22, 2025. For more information, people can visit the church’s Facebook page or reach out to local community centers.

As the holiday season approaches, Another Chance Church hopes that the community will come together to ensure that every child experiences the joy of receiving a gift this Christmas.
